Mercedes C-Class, inspired by the S-Class

TEST - On the model of Russian dolls, the firm with the star gives birth to a family sedan which appears to be the miniature replica of its big sister.

Difficult to escape its history.

At Mercedes, luxury is not about size.

The new C-Class would almost pass for a miniature S-Class.

With the exception of the rear, which refers to the Alfa Romeo Giulia, the latest generation of Mercedes' best-selling model of the last decade borrows its lines and technology from its big sister.

Around an elongated silhouette of nearly 60 mm, including 25 mm in favor of the wheelbase, the sixth generation of this sedan multiplies the refinements: customizable digital instrumentation panel, central shelf of 11.9 inches oriented 6 degrees towards the driver. In addition to its high-quality resolution, the screen has a fingerprint reader and a full-screen navigation display.

We can add augmented reality and head-up display, for the benefit of greater driving comfort.

Quality assemblies, 64 interior ambience colors, elegant color harmonies, relaxing or invigorating massage program (option): the feeling of traveling in the upper class is real.

Only the less generous space, less noise filtration and plastic materials remind us that we are traveling aboard a C-Class.

Advantage to diesel

Adrien Cortesi

For the first time, all engines are electrified.

The two launch versions (204 hp petrol and 200 hp diesel) feature 48 V micro-hybridization providing a 20 hp boost and reducing consumption.

After several hundred kilometers, it is clear that, despite the diesel-bashing and an overweight of around 100 kilos compared to the gasoline engine, the advantage goes to the diesel fuel model (from € 52,950 ), whose higher torque (440 Nm) guarantees great liveliness without altering the sobriety.

The performances are similar but their temperament is different.

Thanks to its torque, the diesel winds up difficulties without forcing while the gasoline engine delivers its potential only in revs, to the detriment of any sound.

Adrien Cortesi

In the absence of being able to count on the steering rear wheels which are still unavailable, we will choose the AMG finish which better suppresses the movements of the body.

In all cases, as a consequence of regenerative braking, it will be necessary to put up with a brake pedal lacking consistency and the long stroke.

It's a detail, but it undermines the enjoyment of a new, truly convincing C-Class.
