Nature has many stories to tell

As part of the "Pearls of the Ampertal" series, ILE Kulturraum Ampertal and the Freising Landscape Management Association invited visitors to take part in a guided tour of the biotope in Kreuth.

Allershausen

- Matthias Maino, one of the nature experts in the Freising district, was able to tell the participants of the bike tour a lot about the special features of the approximately three hectare area.

"The river from the Ice Age was imitated here," said Maino.

The biotope was created with a small body of water as the Amper could have done without dams on the banks.

Maino noted that the neighboring farmers might not be so happy if the river flooded the site five times a year.

The speaker for the tour said, "that it is very lucky to have this area right next to the Amper".

Looking at the biotope, he noted that there used to be around 200 such areas in the Ampertal.

“Today it would be a dream for me to have 50 such spaces,” said Maino.

The local nature expert pointed out that nature can tell people many stories.

Around 1900 the Amper was one of the most fish-rich waters in Bavaria due to its low flow speed.

In addition, the waters have transported a lot of material, so that a large part of today's biotope in Kreuth consists of soil that was once found on the Karwendel.

This historical material together with clever modeling resulted in the special living space.

Hidden behind agricultural land, light carnations, sage, scabioses and knapweed bloom on the biotope area of the municipality of Allershausen.

These are once widespread plants in the Ampertal, which are rarely found in the vicinity of the river today.

The ecological proof

For Matthias Maino, the area near Kreuth is the best proof "that the areas will also be populated by nature if we make them available". The constant croaking around the pond shows a large frog population, and the protected tree frog is also said to have made its home on the three hectares. Matthias Maino would like to see areas that are not part of agricultural food production returned to nature in this form in the future. The plants on the property say a lot about the positive development. The yellow bedstraw, which was probably one of the pioneer plants in the beginning, is currently blooming. This flower can cope with poor soil too. The thistles that spread in the area are indicators of a soil that is now very nutrient-rich. "The thistle is good for nature",says Matthias Maino, “but not to the farmer.” He pointed to a grain field next door with thistles that have also settled there. Today there are around 80 different plant species on the perfectly developed natural area in the Ampertal. The pond's water level, which fluctuates after rainfall, is another imitation of nature as it was centuries ago without human intervention.
