New state election failed - what happens next in Thuringia?

In the opinion of the Greens, there is no threat of a government crisis, but the CDU believes that it will stand still.

In any case, the 2022 budget will be delicate.

Erfurt - Thuringia's red-red-green minority government of Prime Minister Bodo Ramelow (left) has to appeal for support from the opposition for each of its projects in the state parliament after the state elections have failed.

CDU parliamentary group leader Mario Voigt does not see his parliamentary group as a majority procurer after the canceled state parliament dissolution, which was operated jointly by the Left, SPD, Greens and CDU.

"We are not there to secure the policy of a red-red-green minority government," said Voigt of the German press agency in Erfurt.

The transitional agreement with Red-Red-Green, which aimed to dissolve the state parliament, expires at the beginning of the parliamentary summer break, affirmed Voigt.

The group leader of the Greens, Astrid Rothe-Beinlich, fears no government crisis.

The state executive of the Left called on all parliamentary groups to curb the influence of an extreme right-wing AfD on parliamentary decisions.

Ramelow's three-party coalition is missing four votes in the state parliament - the legislative period runs until 2024. The AfD, headed by right-winger Björn Höcke, is the second largest parliamentary group in Erfurt after the left.

The group chairman of the Greens called on the CDU, “now not just to stand on the sidelines and to abuse”.

She also had to make suggestions as to how the practical work in the state parliament could be continued.

The greatest challenge is the budget for 2022. "In case of doubt, we have to enter into an alliance with those who want to take responsibility," said Rothe-Beinlich of the dpa.

In contrast to Rothe-Beinlich, the CDU parliamentary group leader expects growing problems for red-red-green in the state parliament.

“This is a situation where standstill can threaten.” Voigt did not rule out selective support for his parliamentary group when it comes to political projects that the CDU is also pursuing.

The left state executive affirmed that it held and considers the new election of the Thuringian state parliament to be the only possible political reaction to the taboo breach of February 5, 2020, when the CDU and FDP together with the AfD elected short-term Prime Minister Thomas Kemmerich (FDP).
