The important work of the art lab in the As-Suwayda Department of Antiquities is through the restoration, maintenance and cleaning of hundreds of artifacts that were found during excavations in previous seasons, to serve as a bridge over which these pieces and finds pass to their storage and display in the National Museum in As-Suwayda.

According to the Head of the Technical Laboratory Division, Nawal Jarira, the lab, through its specialized technical cadres, was able to restore more than 600 artifacts since the beginning of this year, dating back to the prehistoric, bronze and Hellenistic periods, in addition to the Nabataean period and the Roman era.

Jarira said in a statement to SANA that the journey of archaeological and heritage artifacts starts from the site where they were found, through excavations carried out by national missions, or through confiscations, whether they were pieces of pottery, minerals, coins, or stone. Carrying out a process of cleaning and treating these pieces and repairing them, if necessary, with professionalism and high quality.

According to Jarirah, the technical laboratory in the Sweida Department of Antiquities is considered one of the most active technical laboratories in Syria, with the competencies and professional expertise that it possesses capable of working in the required and best manner.

During the last period, the laboratory restored the artifacts acquired in the Museum of the Great Syrian Revolution in the town of Al-Qurayya, south of As-Suwayda, in cooperation with experts from the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums. It also completed the restoration process for a large number of these pieces resulting from excavations in several locations in the governorate.

She pointed out that these restored pieces belong to the sites of Najma Palace in the city of Suwayda, Wasi, and Tell Dibba Barika archaeological site, where they were restored to their almost complete condition using modern materials and techniques, in addition to showing many of the coins and bronze pieces that were found during the excavations.

Jarirah also indicated that work is continuing to train the technical staff working in the lab, rehabilitate them and refine their expertise to deal with the artifacts resulting from the excavation work and restore them professionally to protect them and take into account the aesthetic and historical aspects in them, in addition to the process of documenting and photographing the pieces before and after work so that the journey of these pieces is from the moment they are discovered on the site And even their display in the museum is clear to the technical staff.

It is worth noting that the Directorate of Administrative Development in the General Directorate of Antiquities and Museums and the As-Suwayda Department of Antiquities organized earlier this year a course in pottery restoration for a number of employees in the department under the supervision of specialists, in order to supply the restoration workshops in the technical laboratory of the Department of Antiquities with a new technical cadre capable of restoring, preserving and raising their efficiency Scientific and technical.
