Since the AMC network premiered

The Walking Dead

in 2010

, the series that adapts Robert Kirkman's comics has become one of the most profitable brands on television.

However, several people in charge of the production have claimed before the courts some benefits that, according to them, correspond to them and have not obtained.

That was the case with filmmaker Frank Darabont.

The director of films such as

The Green Mile

or

Life Sentence

He was in charge of setting up the project and the head of its first season.

During the production of the second season, the AMC network fired him alleging misconduct.

In 2013, Darabont sued AMC and claimed a percentage of the profits of the series, since, according to him, they had lied in his accounts to pay him less than his fair share.

Now, according to

Variety

, both parties have reached an agreement whereby AMC Networks will have to pay 200 million dollars (about 170 million euros) to Darabont and the representative agency CAA.

In addition, the filmmaker will continue to collect a percentage of the future profits of the series and of

Fear the Walking Dead

.

This puts an end to a dispute that has lasted almost a decade and that already had an appointment before the jury in April 2022. In these years, AMC had accused Darabont of not doing his job well and even published emails that proved the aggressive attitude and bad manners of the then responsible for the series.

Added to this lawsuit was the one filed in 2017 by Robert Kirkman and producers Glen Mazzara, Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

They were demanding something similar to Darabont: fairer profit rates, in their opinion.

According to them, AMC withheld "tens of millions of dollars" in profits using "improper and abusive" practices.

They also claimed recognition for the

Talking Dead

program

(in which several people comment on the chapters after its broadcast) and

Fear the Walking Dead

.

Since its premiere in 2010, the success of the series is unquestionable. The production is still underway and is already preparing what will be its 11th and last installment, which will be broadcast in two parts and, therefore, will last until 2022. Fiction became an audience phenomenon that in its sixth season achieved an average of 18 million viewers and was the most watched series of all American television, despite being broadcast on a pay channel. Although those figures have been left behind, he still continues to report good data both in his country of origin and in the rest of the world. His universe has been expanded with new titles such as

Fear the Walking Dead,

already with six seasons behind him, or

The Walking Dead: World Beyond

.

In addition, the channel is preparing several films focusing on the character of Rick Grimes (played by Andrew Lincoln) and a new spinoff series has been announced that will follow the characters of Daryl and Carol, played by Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride.
