Flood in Bavaria - level on the Ache is higher than forecast
Update from July 17, 9:26 p.m .:
It
turns out
differently than expected.
According to
focus.de
, there should be a tidal wave on Sunday night on the Berchtesgadener Ache, the Traun and the Tiroler Achen.
The water should even reach some houses.
The alarm sirens are already ringing in Hallein, Austria.
The flood forecasts were only corrected downwards in the afternoon. But now it looks like the level of the Ache is already 1.5 meters higher than it was originally forecast. The Bavarian Flood Intelligence Service (HND) is currently issuing a “warning of embankments and floods” for the districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land. The same warning also applies to the Iller and Danube in the districts of Donauwörth, Neu-Ulm, Günzburg, Donau-Ries and Dillingen an der Donau. Flooding can also occur in Ingolstadt, the Neuburg-Schrobenhausen district and the Kelheim district.
Update from July 17, 5:14 p.m.:
It seems that the Free State can once again avoid a major flood.
The expected highs at the Danube and Inn will probably not be reached.
The city of Passau * announced on Saturday that the levels had been corrected downwards.
For the Danube, the flood intelligence service (HND) expects a maximum of reporting level 2. The Inn should not even reach reporting level 1.
Nevertheless, floods are expected in the south of Bavaria
In the southeast of Bavaria, too, one no longer expects the rivers to record highs.
The Traunstein Water Management Office does not expect high reporting levels.
Nevertheless, flooding can occur in the districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land.
The warning of the risk of flooding applies here until 2 p.m. on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the DWD continues to warn of continuous rain and storms in the central and eastern Alpine region.
Here, up to Sunday evening, amounts of rain of up to 80 liters per square meter can come together.
First report from July 17, 1:34 p.m .:
Munich / Rosenheim - On Friday, the German Weather Service (DWD) warned in advance of possible floods on the edge of the Alps due to prolonged heavy rain.
The flood news service (HND) did not rule out worse floods, especially near the Alps.
Flood in Upper Bavaria too?
DWD with severe weather warning for several districts
A specific level three storm warning (of four possible levels) has been available since Saturday morning.
It is valid until Monday morning (July 19, 9 a.m.) and for the following districts:
Garmisch-Partenkirchen
Bad Toelz-Wolfratshausen
Miesbach
Rosenheim
Traunstein
Berchtesgadener Land
Storm warning: Up to 160 liters per square meter expected
Between Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Rosenheim, the DWD expects “heavy continuous rain of varying intensity.
Precipitation amounts between 60 l / m² and 70 l / m² are expected.
In congested locations, quantities of up to 80 l / m² are achieved. ”According to the DWD, things could hit the districts of Traunstein and Berchtesgadener Land worse.
Up to 90 liters per square meter are possible there - in stowage locations even up to 160 liters per square meter.
Flood warning: Experts specify the forecast
On Saturday morning, the Bavarian Flood News Service (HND) of the Bavarian State Office for the Environment also concretized its forecast.
According to the HND, however, this is not that easy: "The focus of the precipitation forecasts currently fluctuates between the individual model runs and makes it difficult to create reliable water level forecasts."
Flood warning for Ammer, Loisach and Isar - and mountain streams
According to current forecasts, the focus is on the Isar catchment area with correspondingly high water levels to be expected, including on the lower Isar, Loisach and Ammer.
In general, from Saturday lunchtime in the alpine region and partly also in the foothills of the Alps, significant, partly rapidly rising water levels and the associated embankments and floods must be expected.
There are also flood warnings for the districts of Rosenheim and Berchtesgadener Land.
At the moment, however, the experts do not assume that a reporting level will be reached at all.
All of this is, of course, always a matter of prognoses.
What exactly happens remains to be seen and meanwhile one should perhaps rather rely on the official forecasts.
Storms and the risk of flooding on the edge of the Alps: expert opinions differ
Because all in all, a severe weather warning of heavy rain after the catastrophe of the century in the Eifel attracts a lot of attention. Accordingly, there is a lot of speculation. And since, as the HND already noted, the weather models provide relatively different results, there is also room for a wide variety of statements. Later on Friday evening, individual experts outbid the DWD warning to 200 liters per square meter (
focus.de
) - that would be more than what fell in the Eifel. Others speak of the all-clear on Saturday morning, as High Dana sweeps away the clouds over the British Isles (
The Weather Channel
).
Wetter.net
on the other hand, Hoch Dana sees the role of promoting heavy rain as it presses the clouds to the edge of the Alps, where they would collectively fall.
