Corona: Germany-wide incidence jumps to double digits - first circle even over 60

First report from July 18, 2021

: Berlin - The Robert Koch Institute * reported a double-digit incidence * for Germany for the first time on Sunday (July 18). On Sunday morning the value was 10, compared to the previous day there were 1,292 more cases. The previous day the incidence was 9.4, a week ago it was 6.2. The value describes the new infection per 100,000 inhabitants over a period of seven days. The reason for the slight increase is the highly contagious Delta variant of the virus. According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the Delta variant now accounts for more than 50 percent of new infections.

The district of Birkenfeld recorded the highest incidence with a 7-day incidence of 63. This is followed by the city of Trier with 40.3 and Darmstadt with 36.3.

However, a total of 13 districts and regions also reported an incidence of 0 on Sunday, including Vulkaneifel, Tirschenreuth, Kulmbach, Coburg and Weimar.

In these regions, there has not been a single corona case in the past seven days.

Peter Altmaier against renewed lockdown: "It would be devastating!"

The corona numbers show a slight upward trend, but Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) rules out another corona lockdown in Germany.

"We must and will prevent a new lockdown," the minister told

Bild am Sonntag

.

A renewed lockdown * would be "devastating for many shops and restaurants that have been closed for months" from the point of view of the CDU politician.

He also does not currently see any further restrictions as necessary, because as long as there is no threat of overloading the health system, there is no reason for new measures or even a lockdown, the minister continues.

However, Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier considers the speed of the vaccination campaign to be too slow.

For example, the politician suggests mobile vaccination teams that “speak to people in cafes and restaurants and vaccinate them directly on site”.

According to the Robert Koch Institute, almost half (45.9 percent) of the population in Germany had been vaccinated by Friday.

59.7 percent of people had received at least one vaccination.

According to a research group at TU Berlin, Germany is already at the beginning of a fourth wave.

"According to our simulations, an exponential increase in hospital numbers will start in October," the researchers' report said.
