Nicaraguan exiles protest from Costa Rica

With slogans such as "let's call the noise" and "exile does not surrender," dozens of Nicaraguans living in Costa Rica held a sit-in on Sunday in the Plaza de la Democracia in the center of the capital, San José .

The demonstration began with a march from the monument to León Cortés, in the La Sabana Metropolitan Park, with banners and proclamations for "the freedom of political prisoners, justice and a free Nicaragua." 

Carlos Huezo, from the organization SOS Nicaragua Human Rights from Costa Rica, told CNN that several groups of Cubans and Venezuelans in the country joined the sit-in, which began with the Nicaraguan national anthem and a minute of silence for the situation of this country.

Between May 28 and July 5, the Nicaraguan National Police detained 26 opposition leaders from that country, including six presidential candidates.

 In several statements, the Nicaraguan National Police has indicated that most of the detainees are investigated for alleged acts against national sovereignty and inciting foreign interference in internal affairs of the country, in accordance with the Law for the Defense of the Rights of the People. to independence, sovereignty and self-determination for peace.

 Nicaragua's elections are scheduled for November 7.

"Freedom of political prisoners"

According to Susana López, one of the participants, with the demonstration they want to send a message to the people of Nicaragua so that they do not lose hope for a change and that from Costa Rica they remain firm for "the freedom of political prisoners", democracy and Justice.

For his part, David Quintana, from the Boletín Ecológico news portal, explained that they are calling on the international community to act for human rights not only in Nicaragua, but also in Cuba and Venezuela, stating that it is a chain that affects to the rest of the countries of the region.  

Ana Quirós, representative in Costa Rica of the Nicaraguan opposition movement Blue and White National Unity, assured that with activities of this type the Nicaraguan people in exile are present, although they have been forced to leave.

"They continue living, suffering and above all fighting for Nicaragua," he added, noting that they are seeking democratic change.

 Sergio Marín, director of the Nicaraguan program La Mesa Redonda, which is broadcast on social networks, insisted that the international community should maintain attention on Nicaragua, as well as Cuba and Venezuela.

 "They are peoples who fight for their democracy and for a better future," he said.

 Marín arrived in Costa Rica four weeks ago, requesting refuge for what he considers "direct threats" from the government of President Daniel Ortega.
