The T Verifica certification was announced on July 14, 2021, after a rigorous evaluation of more than three months and the ratification of the IFCN advisory council.

"Recognition is especially important because it makes us the first, and therefore the only

certified

fact-checkers

in Spanish in the United States, an essential tool against misinformation that especially affects the Latino community," said Gemma García, Vice President of Noticias Telemundo.

The International Fact-Checking Network is part of the prestigious Poynter Institute, a journalism school based in St. Petersburg, Florida.

It was founded in September 2015 to promote best practices in verification work and bring together the world's leading fact-checkers.

T Verifica was born in September 2020, shortly before the presidential elections.

Since then we have been publishing

relevant information on critical issues for Hispanics

, with a special focus on fighting misinformation about the COVID-19 pandemic and the vaccination campaign.

Our mission is to verify the accuracy and veracity of statements made by politicians, public officials, and other prominent figures in public discussion.

We also monitor and deny the false news and rumors that most affect the Latino community in the United States, and that circulate in the press and social networks.

The fight against disinformation has become especially important during the COVID-19 pandemic, so much so that the Joe Biden Administration considers it an “urgent threat to public health”.

"The misinformation has caused confusion and has led people to reject COVID-19 vaccines and reject public health measures such as masks and physical distancing, as well as use unproven treatments," warned Surgeon General Vivek Murthy. June, 15.

"The Latino community has been the victim of the parallel pandemic of misinformation and in many cases it has paid for it with its life. It continues to pay for it, because Latinos are still among the most reluctant groups to be vaccinated," explained Gemma García.

"Having a tool like T-Verifica, with the IFCN seal of rigor, gives us extra credibility in our daily task of telling things as they are," he added.
