Poing could become the first municipality in the district to receive the “bicycle-friendly” certificate. A commission recommends that Poing be given the award.

Poing could become the first municipality in the district to receive the “bicycle-friendly” certificate.

A commission recommends that Poing be given the award.

Poing - There are currently 37 districts, municipalities and cities in Bavaria that have been awarded the “Bicycle-friendly Municipality” certificate.

The award is given at the end of each year by the Bavarian Ministry of Construction and Transport and the Working Group for Bicycle-Friendly Municipalities (AGFK) Bavaria.

Most recently, the cities of Freising, Fürstenfeldbruck, Lindau, Memmingen, Neumarkt in der Oberpfalz and Passau were honored, as well as the communities of Gröbenzell and Oberschleißheim and the districts of Augsburg, Nürnberger Land and Munich.

Poing: Commission cycles through town

"The award is a recognition of what has been achieved so far in promoting cycling," says the AGFK website. The city of Nuremberg was the first to receive an award in 2013. In general, a recertification is required after seven years, during which further progress must be recognizable, informs the AGFK.

On Monday morning, the evaluation committee cycled through Poing together with Mayor Thomas Stark and representatives of the municipality of Poing and the district office of Ebersberg to get an idea of the municipality's bike-friendliness.

The tour led, among other things, through the Endbachweg, which has been officially designated as a “bicycle road” for a few days.

In addition, the entourage cycled on Schulstrasse and Römerstrasse and through the new pedestrian and bicycle underpass at the S-Bahn station to Bergfeldpark and Bergfeldstrasse.

Neuralgic roads such as Neufarner and Gruber Strasse were also inspected - there are no bike paths here, but these district roads are the responsibility of the Ebersberg district.

Poing: It started with a proposal from the Greens

On their tour, the evaluation committee also visited the park-and-ride building on the north side of the S-Bahn station with its own bike-and-ride department. The commission was very impressed, as Mayor Stark reported afterwards. In general, the commission has rated it as very positive that the subject of cycling and cycling friendliness has played a major role at the political level in the local council for years.

It was the local council faction of Bündnis90 / Die Grünen that applied to the administration and the local council in 2015 that Poing should try to be accepted into the AGFK.

The municipal council had agreed, and Poing has been a member of the AGFK since July 1, 2016.

Since then, employees in the town hall and the municipal council have repeatedly dealt with the subject of cycling in Poing and tried to find and implement opportunities for improvement.

Such as the now designated bicycle road, for example.

Everything is bundled in the municipal cycling concept.

Ministry of Transport decides

After the one and a half hour bike tour on Monday morning, the evaluation committee (representatives of the AGFK and the Ministry of Transport) withdrew for a consultation, in order to announce the result later: The committee will recommend the Ministry to award the municipality of Poing the certificate “Bicycle-friendly municipality”.

The decision is ultimately made by the State Ministry - always towards the end of the year.

"I am very happy about this evaluation and recommendation," said Mayor Thomas Stark on Monday afternoon.

The many efforts of the town hall and the municipal council would - in the event of a positive decision - be rewarded with the certificate.
