Has 2020 changed our view of what constitutes good leadership?
Daniel Pink:
I'm not sure.
If I had to choose between yes and no, I would flip a coin.
The optimist in me says things have changed.
It is remarkable: 20 years ago I wrote in the book "Free Agent Nation" that in the future people will work for themselves instead of for companies.
Back then everyone said I was crazy.
CEOs stated that their employees would never work from home.
The idea of the home office was spurned for decades.
Then Corona came - and within three days it was working all over the world.
What do you conclude from this?
That managers should trust their employees.
That should be their basic attitude - and not mistrust, as has often been the case in the USA and Europe so far.
Employees shouldn't have to prove that they can be trusted - as a matter of principle, they should be trusted first.
That would significantly improve the world of work.
During the pandemic, the home office was a kind of huge international trust experiment in which the participants proved worldwide that they can be trusted.
It would be crazy to roll backwards again now.
