After the advice of a train driver, the Bichler fire brigade and veterinarian Diana Ruf saved the life of a young stork on Saturday.

Soon the animal will return to Bichl.

Bichl

- Such an operation is not every day: A train driver informed the

Bichl

fire brigade on Saturday evening that a young stork was hanging upside down in the branches in the bushes on the railway line and was stuck.

It seems that this young bird still has to practice a little with the art of flying, because it probably crashed land on its first foray out of the nest.

This year there are two stork nests in the electricity pylons at Bichler Bahnhof, one to the south and one to the north. Each pair of parents nests in it and has offspring in the spring. However, due to the cold and damp weather, not all young animals survived; currently, veterinarian Diana Ruf only observes one young animal in each nest. "The victim is probably the animal from the northern nest," says Ruf.

After the engine driver's advice, three members of the Bichler fire brigade, including third commander Hermann Spanner, went on a search - and quickly found what they were looking for.

"The animal was tangled upside down in the bushes, was completely soaked and exhausted," reports Spanner.

The branches were bent aside and the animal was carefully freed.

The parent birds had meanwhile observed what was happening.

The young stork was very weak and could no longer fly.

"He was very apathetic," reports Spanner.

“We were worried that the fox would fetch him during the night.” So the firefighters informed the Bichler veterinarian Diana Ruf.

Animal was injured

The mission was uncharted territory for them too.

“I'm not specialized in wild birds.” Together they caught the stork, which did not offer any resistance, and took him to the nearby practice.

There the vet found that one of the wings had been nodded.

"The animal was soaking wet and completely weakened," reports Ruf.

“We all don't know how long the young stork has been hanging there.” She thanks the train driver for paying attention and calling the fire brigade.

Ruf gave the animal, which weighs around three and a half kilograms, infusions and pain medication.

The cub recovered quite well during the night.

“I got up once and it made a good impression.” In addition, the bird was given protein and protein-rich special food through a tube.

Vogel is now in a bird of prey sanctuary to be fostered

Because the stork needs special care and special food (call: “I don't have mice and day-old chicks”), she took him to Alfred Aigner's raptor sanctuary near Otterfing on Sunday.

"There he will be professionally nursed up until he can be released back into the wild here in Bichl." Ruf values the work of Aigner very much.

The wild bird expert also takes care of birds of prey, owls and wall falcons in need, for example.

“You need a lot of expertise for that.” Aigner estimated that the Bichler Storch that crashed is around eight weeks old.

The animal will have to spend a few days in Otterfing to recover and regain its strength.

Then the bird is brought back to Bichl and released into the wild.

Donations for the station:
