He has a master's degree in Educational Psychology since 1995. He is a teacher in a village in the province of Chota, in Cajamarca. Until 2017, he was part of the Peru Posible party, founded by former president Alejandro Toledo, who is currently imprisoned in the United States for an extradition order, after the Judicial Power of Peru issued preventive detention against him in 2017 for alleged bribes he would have received from the construction company Odebrecht, accusations that he denied at the time as a trade unionist.

Castillo was one of the most visible faces in a teachers' strike that occurred during the government of Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Then, Castillo was accused of being close to members of the Movadef, identified by the police as the political arm of the Shining Path, something that they deny.

Pedro Castillo has denied being akin to Movadef.

Castillo defines himself as a social fighter who says he will end social conflicts.

According to Vladimir Cerrón, secretary general of Peru Libre, he represents the most illustrious position of the Peruvian left and represents the left of deep Peru, unlike what he called the left of Paris.

The economic part of his government plan says that its parameters have been taken from the governmental experience of the Plurinational Republic of Bolivia and the Republic of Ecuador, the Government of Morales and Correa.

In this document it is stated that it will proceed to the nationalization of the deposit in question in the mining, hydropower, communications sectors, among others, in the event that what it calls the new negotiation conditions is not accepted.
