A heavy-duty convoy is winding its way from Hallertau to downtown Munich these days.

It is a special spectacle even for the police.

Hallertau

- Many a person had feared a major misfortune or a crime.

“Does anyone know what kind of a large number of police is around Au, Attenkirchen and Reichertshausen?” Wondered a user in a local Facebook group late on Monday evening.

The answer came promptly - and it was a relief: the many blue lights and the countless nocturnal warning lights and headlights were part of a heavy transport.

But what a one!

400-ton generators on the road - "Rare in Germany"

The convoy can be seen these days in numerous towns and on various sections of the route between the Hallertau and the city of Munich. Because the XXL delivery has to be transported from Kelheim's Danube port to the southern heating power station on Munich's Schäftlarnstrasse. The enormous dimensions of the freight - two generators each weighing 400 tons - make it necessary to split it into several stages and days or nights.

“Something like that is seldom driven in Germany,” says Josef Demmel, and there is an audible fascination in the voice of the chief inspector of the Freising Police.

As a traffic expert, Demmel is responsible for ensuring that the heavy transport passes the Freising district undamaged - and that everything is in order along the route.

Around 20 officers from Freising and Moosburg therefore accompany the convoy with patrol cars and police motorcycles.

Even if almost identical transports took place last year and those responsible therefore have a certain routine: There is still tension when the low-loader from the specialist company paves their arduous journey through the region.

Heavy transport on the way on the B13 in the districts of Freising and Munich

Josef Demmel has impressive figures ready: "63 meters in length, 5.3 meters in width and 6.4 meters in height - each." A low loader alone has 35 axles with eight tires. There are push and pull vehicles to support the trucks. The executing transport company is “absolute professionals”, the chief inspector admits. Everything went smoothly on the previous route, which includes stations such as Mainburg, Tegernbach, Rudelzhausen, Au / Hallertau, Attenkirchen and Zolling. “It rained a little yesterday, and when the road is wet, the truck tires will squeal. They can then easily go through when driving uphill. ”But that is not a problem for transport.

After crossing the Hallertau, the monsters reached their intermediate destination in the Ampertal at around 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning and were parked shortly before Allershausen.

If everything goes well, the plan for the continuation on Tuesday evening is to maneuver the convoy on through Allershausen via Hohenkammer and on the B13 to the Olympic shooting range near Garching.

Josef Demmel expects a large audience again on this section: “Especially at places like the Obermaier intersection in Allershausen.

Tonight we have a re-tensioning process in front of us in which the heavy transport has to be relocated.

That kind of thing attracts a lot of onlookers. ”TV teams have also frequently accompanied Demmel's missions:“ They shoot reports about heavy transports for broadcasters such as DMAX. ”

Reloading with truck-mounted cranes planned near Garching

The Freising Police's area of responsibility ends with the intermediate goal of the Olympic shooting range, but the transport still has to overcome a few hurdles: "The generators are reloaded with truck cranes onto other low-loaders and then driven to Ludwigsstrasse in downtown Munich." The final stage is then to the destination of the industrial facilities: the southern heating power station.
