The Secretary-General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres, strongly condemned the terrorist attack that targeted a market in Sadr City yesterday, killing about 27 people.

A statement issued by Guterres' deputy spokesman, Farhan Haq, and reported by the United Nations website, said that the latter "strongly condemns the horrific bomb attack that targeted civilians in a market in Sadr City, and extends its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and to the government and people of Iraq, and wishes a speedy recovery for the injured."

Guterres stressed in the statement that "this deadly attack ahead of Eid al-Adha is a reminder to everyone that the scourge of terrorism knows no borders" and stressed "the need to bring the perpetrators of this crime to justice urgently."

In turn, UNICEF Representative in Iraq Shema Sin Gupta confirmed in a statement that "this heinous act ahead of Eid al-Adha is a horrific reminder of the extent of violence that children in Iraq are still facing," noting that dozens, including children, were killed or injured in the terrorist bombing in the Al-Wahilat popular market.

She stressed that “children should be protected at all times and raised in a safe environment free from all forms of violence.”

Yesterday, a terrorist detonated an explosive device targeting a popular market in Sadr City, east of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, killing 27 people, including a child, and wounding 45 others.
