Unionist Pedro Castillo elected president in Peru

This teacher, new to politics, was proclaimed Monday the winner of the June 6 vote against candidate Keiko Fujimori.


Peru has finally emerged from the uncertainty.

Pedro Castillo will be the new Peruvian president.

The National Electoral Tribunal (Jurado nacional de elecciones, JNE), finally validated the victory of the leftist candidate in the presidential election of June 6.

He will be invested on July 28, the day the country will celebrate the bicentenary of its independence.

This is a turning point for Peru, both for the modest origins of the new head of state and for the fact that he is supported by left-wing parties.

“He's a rural school teacher,”

explains Peruvian political scientist Patricia Zarate.

It is the first time that such a humble person has reached the supreme office.

It represents a large sector of the population which previously felt deprived of national representation. ”
