President Alberto Fernández headed this Wednesday the presentation of the new National Identity Document (DNI) for non-binary people and assured that "

the State should not care about people's sex

."

"What some see critically is a step that we are taking. This is a step that I hope will end the day when the DNI

asks no one if they are a man, a woman or whatever

. That is what we really have to achieve. and to achieve. What matters to the State to know the sexual orientation of its citizens, is not what it needs to know, "said Fernández during the ceremony held at the Bicentennial Museum.

The president, who was accompanied by the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo "Wado" de Pedro and the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity, Elizabeth Gómez Alcorta, had an uncomfortable moment when a person who was located in the audience shouted that they were not an "x", in reference to the letter used to designate those who do not perceive themselves as men or women.

"Between the ideal and the possible, let's go for the possible because we are closer to the ideal. The ideal will be when all of us are all and no one cares about people's sex," the President emphasized.

The measure allows access to the DNI and that the Passport corresponds to the self-perceived identity of the person who processes it, through the implementation of the nomenclature "x", and was already made official through Decree 476/2021 that was published in this Wednesday's edition of the Official Gazette.

The norm bears the signature of the head of state;

the Chief of Cabinet, Santiago Cafiero;

the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo 'Wado' de Pedro;

and the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity, Elizabeth Gómez Alcorta.

The decree provided that the National Registry of Persons (Renaper) "must adapt the characteristics and nomenclatures of the DNI and Passports that it issues, exclusively, in order to comply with the provisions of Law No. 26,743", in reference to the gender identity law approved in Argentina on May 24, 2012.

The measure makes Argentina the first country in Latin America to enable through the new decree the possibility of entering a different option in the "sex" field of the DNI, in line with the modification that other countries in the world have already carried out, such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

As reported, those who have already made their registration rectification and processed the new DNI beforehand will be able to access this option.

The decree indicates that "a third documentary option will be incorporated in the 'sex' category in the DNI and the Passport, in order to contemplate the right to gender identity with respect to those people who do not recognize themselves within the female binary system / male".

In addition, the DNI that has the letter "X" in the zone reserved for sex "will be valid as a Travel Document for the purposes established in the Agreement on Travel Documents of the Mercosur States Parties and Associated States."
