Non-binary gender: neither male, nor female 0:55
(CNN) -
The president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, announced on Wednesday the new National Identity Document (DNI) for non-binary people.
The objective of the DNI is to guarantee the right to gender identity of people who do not recognize themselves as either a woman or a man, he said.
"There are other identities besides men and women that must be respected," Fernández said during a press conference from the Casa Rosada Museum in Buenos Aires.
The new document establishes the terminology "x" in the gender field in DNI and modified passports.
Fernández said that there are a thousand ways to love and be loved and be happy.
"What does it matter to the State to know the sexual orientation of its citizens?" Said the president.

During the event, Fernández, together with the Minister of Women, Gender and Diversity, Elizabeth Gómez Alcorta, and the Minister of the Interior, Eduardo de Pedro, delivered the first three non-binary documents.
Gómez Alcorta said that the implementation of the non-binary DNI is "an action focused on building a more egalitarian but also more inclusive society."

According to a statement released by the office of the Argentine presidential palace, the nation becomes the first in Latin America to allow the possibility of typing a different option in the "gender" field of the DNI.
This new measure is in line with the modifications of other countries, such as Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Foreigners residing in Argentina can modify their ID at the National Migration Office.
