The Biden administration has decided to delay the reopening of the US consulate in Jerusalem until after the new government in Israel passes the budget in early November, Israeli, Palestinian and American sources said today (Wednesday).
The US decision came following a request by the Prime Minister's Office and the State Department to wait with the move.
The decision shows how important it is for the Biden administration to help stabilize the new government in Israel and not to take steps that could harm it.

The American Consulate in Jerusalem has been the United States' diplomatic mission to the Palestinian Authority for more than two decades.
The consulate was closed in 2019 by the administration of former US President Donald Trump and merged into the US Embassy in Jerusalem.
Biden has promised to reopen the embassy, which is considered a hot political potato in Israel.
Opposition leader Benjamin Netanyahu has spoken out several times against Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and Foreign Minister Yair Lapid on the issue of the US Consulate, claiming that they are submitting to the Biden administration on the issue. But if the budget passes the government will probably date at least until the end of 2022.

Palestinian officials who met two weeks ago with a delegation from the State House of Representatives that visited Ramallah said they were aware that the US consulate would not reopen before the budget was transferred to Israel.
U.S. sources said Palestinian officials had made it clear to members of Congress that they were willing to accept the delay and wait, but wanted the consulate to open immediately after the budget was passed.
The U.S. State Department is continuing its work on reopening the embassy and the process is expected to take some time anyway.
At the same time, proceedings are underway to appoint a new Consul General.
