Joe Biden had to bow to the determination of Angela Merkel.
The White House and the German government on Wednesday unveiled an agreement leading to the approval of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline project. By delivering to Germany a white gold mined in Russia, directly via the Baltic Sea, this pipe is controversial because it would allow in Moscow to bypass Ukraine in its European gas supplies.
For decades, these deliveries have followed the route drawn by Soviet engineers, in this case that of the Druzhba (“friendship”) gas pipeline, which was put into service in 1963.

The compromise aims to push Gazprom, controlled by the Kremlin, to renew for ten years the historic delivery contract signed between Moscow and Kiev, the last version of which expires in 2024. Berlin and Washington are also seeking to promote the development of green energy in Ukraine via a fund endowed with 1 billion euros, according to Bloomberg and Reuters.
