Mexico and the United States will continue to limit crossings at their shared border until August 21 in order to contain the spread of covid-19, Mexico's foreign ministry said Wednesday (July 21).

The US government has informed us of the decision to extend the partial border closure for an additional month,
” the Foreign Office said on Twitter.

The restrictions on land traffic between the two countries were implemented on March 21, 2020 in order to contain the spread of the coronavirus.
Since then, the two countries have kept the border over 3,000 km long closed to tourists or occasional visitors.
The passage of goods, workers or students, is however authorized.
The Mexican government plans to complete the vaccination of the population of its municipalities bordering the United States with a view to reopening its northern border.
Mexican Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard and US Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas met last June in Mexico to agree steps the two countries would take to reopen their land border.
Mexico, which has a population of 126 million, launched its program on June 17 to vaccinate all adults in the border area with doses of Johnson & Johnson offered by the US government. The United States has more than 34.1 million people infected and 609,000 deaths, while Mexico on Tuesday recorded 2.6 million confirmed cases and 236,810 deaths from covid-19.
