Emergency flood aid: Altmaier promises financial security for those affected

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) wants to offer people in the flood areas financial security.

Federal Minister of Economics Peter Altmaier (CDU) wants to offer people in the flood areas financial security.

"We will make it clear today that it will not fail because of the money," said Altmaier on Wednesday on Deutschlandfunk.

According to media reports, the federal cabinet wants to make 200 million euros available on Wednesday, and the same amount should come from the affected federal states again.

The planned decision on the flood emergency aid creates clarity, said Altmaier.

"This means that the authorities of the federal states, the municipal authorities, the districts, but also the state authorities know that they can pay out this emergency aid."

He hopes that the affected federal states will implement the aid quickly.

Compared to earlier emergency aid programs after flood disasters, the currently planned decision includes an "important improvement", said the Minister for Economic Affairs.

The aids explicitly included "bridging sales losses and similar emergencies".

This is to prevent many companies already weakened by the corona pandemic from having to file for bankruptcy after the flood disaster.

It is still unclear whether the payments will actually be limited to 10,000 euros per affected company, as previously discussed, said Altmaier.

This must be regulated in the administrative agreements with the countries, which could "hopefully be concluded in the next four to five days".

The authorities would "ensure carefully and with the necessary intensity" that the damage caused is recorded.

"Of course, we attach great importance to the fact that wherever there is insurance coverage, for example, the insurances also provide", said Altmaier.

Overall, disaster control must be reconsidered in the future.

There is "no guarantee at all" that extreme weather events will in future be limited to certain locations or cities, said Altmaier.

"And that's why we have to ask ourselves the question everywhere: Are our devices holding up?"

Hazards from extreme weather events would have a potentially greater extent in the future.

"That must be taken into account," said Altmaier.
