In Nicaragua, both the Ministry of Health and the independent Citizen Observatory agree that there was a rebound in cases and deaths from covid-19 in the country, which according to PAHO is the one that presents the greatest deficit in the number of vaccinated people in the region.

The Nicaraguan Ministry of Health reported on Tuesday a significant rebound in covid-19 cases in the country during the week of July 13 to 19.

There were 341 new cases and one death from coronavirus, or 35 more infections compared to the previous week, when 306 cases were reported.

To date, the Ministry totals 9,309 cases of coronavirus and 194 deaths since the pandemic began.

In contrast, the independent Covid-19 Citizen Observatory totals 19,537 verified suspected cases of coronavirus as of July 14, 312 new this week.

The Observatory adds 3,591 deaths from pneumonia or suspected of coronavirus, 95 this week.

In the July 7 report, 221 new infections and 41 deaths had been reported.

The independent observatory also reported 1,145 suspected cases of covid-19 among health personnel, 33 of which were reported this week.

The Nicaraguan government has not reported infections or deaths among medical personnel, although President Daniel Ortega acknowledged in August 2020 that some doctors have died from the disease.

PAHO regrets lack of information on covid-19 in Nicaragua

Ciro Ugarte, director of medical emergencies of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), regretted this Wednesday in a virtual conference that there is no exact data on the situation of the pandemic in the country.

"Unfortunately, we do not have enough information on the epidemiological situation in Nicaragua because the information we receive is very brief information. It is the same information that we receive through the media and through international health regulations, which does not disaggregate the data such as to be able to report the number of health personnel that has been affected, the information by place or by time, the disaggregation by age, with respect to the Nicaraguan territory and as my colleague Jairo Méndez has said, also related to the presence of of variants, "he said.

The delta variant is already in Costa Rica

This concern is manifested just a few hours after the Minister of Health of Costa Rica, Daniel Salas, confirmed on Tuesday the presence in his country of the delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes covid-19.

Salas explained that 16 cases of the variant were detected, of them, 12 patients are Costa Rican and four foreigners, one of them from Nicaragua.

Since the arrival of the virus in the country, Nicaragua has not declared a preventive quarantine, nor has it officially canceled classes in the educational system or recreational, cultural, tourist or political events.

  • The most contagious delta variant of the coronavirus now accounts for 83% of new cases in the United States.

The vice president and government spokesperson, Rosario Murillo, reported on Friday that only in the context of the celebration of the 42nd anniversary of the Revolution, 5,000 activities were scheduled.

"We call on the health authorities to promote a clear orientation of the public use of the mask in an appropriate way, especially at this critical stage to stop the spread of the virus," urged the Covid-19 Citizen Observatory in its most recent report.

Slow vaccination

PAHO reported this Tuesday through its website that, according to official data, Nicaragua is the country with the greatest deficit in the number of vaccinated people in the region.

According to the WHO regional agency, a total of 415,640 doses of covid-19 vaccines have been applied in Nicaragua, but only 162,874 people completed their immunization schedule with the two required doses.

According to the regional organization, this is equivalent to 2.43% of the total population in Nicaragua.

Ugarte, from PAHO, said this Wednesday that in the coming weeks several orders of vaccines will arrive in the country as part of the Covax mechanism, of which 97,000 doses donated by Spain, another 134,000 will possibly arrive between August and September.

The Nicaraguan government so far has not officially reported how much it has invested in vaccines against covid-19.
