Air purifier: Schongau wants to follow district council

Air purifiers for all schools to protect against the corona virus are required.

Should we also equip the Schongau elementary school?

And if so, with which devices?

The building committee did not make the decision easy for itself.

As with middle school, you want to follow the decision of the district council, which will be made tomorrow.

Schongau -

“It is a controversial topic, especially whether these devices bring as much as they cost at the end of the day.” Mayor Falk Sluyterman brought up the problem that the members of the building and environment committee had to deal with in just one a sentence to the point.

Despite the announced funding for each device, the topic was not received with great enthusiasm in other municipalities either.

Many questions are unanswered, not least in terms of public procurement law and what the availability looks like.

What if the air purifiers end up being twice as expensive due to the high demand and you are left with high costs?

Primary school is part of the school center

The Staufer elementary school is also part of a school center, which must also be taken into account.

"It would be a strange result if you set different standards for the different schools," says Sluyterman with a view to Realschule and Gymnasium, for which the group is responsible for material expenses.

He therefore recommended to proceed in a similar way as at the association meeting of the middle school last week and to join the decision of the district council.

He also recommended the same addition: The devices should be operational by October 30th.

City architect Sebastian Dietrich made it clear that there is a political goal, albeit one that is not legally binding for the sponsors, to obtain technically adequate ventilation and air purification systems for all classes at the start of school in September.

According to the funding concept for mobile ventilation systems, up to 50 percent of the eligible costs are available, up to a maximum of 1750 euros per room and device.

26 devices would have to be purchased for the primary school

For the Staufer elementary school, Dietrich suggested three possible modules: ten mobile air purification devices in the old building and 16 for the new building (as a supplement to the existing ventilation system).

The city calculates around 3500 euros gross per device with the required six times the air throughput of the room volume per hour.

Another solution is also conceivable for the old building: a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery could be retrofitted there.

“But this project could not be implemented by autumn.” Costs per classroom: 12,000 to 15,000 euros.

Up to 80 percent of the costs would be reimbursed.

“But nobody can say whether this is enough to prevent infections. In the case of droplet infection, masks and ventilation are the most effective means,” says Dietrich.

"The devices are politically wanted, we only have one decision in the dark", complained Stephan Hild (UWV), who was torn between whether one should follow the district council decision.

He asked whether the prices of the devices could not also be capped.

Such a tender is difficult to revoke, so Sluyterman.

Acquisition has been "pushed" by the government

Ilona Böse (SPD) was angry about the way in which the government had "pushed" the purchase of the devices.

“It minimizes the risk of infection, but whether it is a guarantee for classroom teaching is questionable.” She suggested that the old building of the primary school should be equipped with the large ventilation systems in any case.

"We would be stupid if we didn't do that with this funding, I would be for it even without a pandemic," affirmed Martin Schwarz (SPD).

"We can only do it wrong, either we are not caring enough for the children, or we expose ourselves to the accusation of wasting taxpayers' money," says Bettina Buresch (Greens).

Nina Konstantin (ALS) also put it similarly: “We are totally in the air”.

Only Schwarz and Kornelia Funke (CSU) were ultimately in favor of ordering 26 devices for the primary school in any case - regardless of the decision of the district council.

Against the vote of Schwarz, one follows the suggestion of the middle school association.

The fresh air systems for the old building are extra on the agenda.

And how loud the devices are has long been tested in Peißenberg.
