It's high season on Mallorca right now.

But the corona cases on the holiday island have been skyrocketing for days.

A sword of Damocles hovers over the holiday island.

Palma - So far, all of Spain is "only" on the list of corona risk areas - as well as the Balearic islands of Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera.

This could change soon.

In Mallorca, the corona numbers have been at a high level for weeks.

Not a good signal.

The holiday island could be classified as a high incidence area.

The 7-day incidence on Thursday is above a critical 200 limit - exactly at 242.37, according to the data from the Spanish health authority (Wednesday evening the value was 349.98).

Corona: Mallorca reports hundreds of new infections every day

Experience shows that the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) updates the list of corona risk areas on Friday.

It is likely that Mallorca will be upgraded from a risk area to a high incidence area.

However, according to the RKI, the classification takes place in two stages:

“High incidence areas

are risk areas with particularly high case numbers.

The classification as a high-incidence area is based on a two-stage assessment, as is the case with the risk areas.

First of all, it is determined in which states / regions there were more than 200 newly infected people per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days.

On the basis of further qualitative and quantitative criteria, it can be determined in the second step whether a particularly increased or not particularly increased risk of infection is justified despite falling below or exceeding the incidence. "

Mallorca as a high incidence area: what will change for holidaymakers?

The classification in a high incidence area has consequences for travelers.

There is generally a 10-day quarantine obligation.

Those who have been vaccinated and those who have recovered can shorten this after the first day.

All others can be exempt from quarantine at home after the fifth day at the earliest with a negative test result.

A digital entry registration is required before entering Germany.

As before, flight passengers must be tested for Corona before departure.

The Federal Ministry of Health points out that vaccination and convalescence certificates can replace a negative test certificate and release you from entry quarantine.

Corona: Does Mallorca threaten to be classified as a virus variant area?

The delta variant causes the number of infections in Mallorca to skyrocket.

If they are classified as a virus variant area, all returnees must be in quarantine for 14 days.

At least according to the travel regulations, which apply until July 28, 2021.

However, the Corona travel regulation has been extended until September 10th.

The federal government has decided on some changes.

Fully vaccinated people who come from so-called virus variant areas can in future end their quarantine prematurely if they can prove that their vaccination protection against the virus variant is effective in the area visited.

Experts consider it unlikely that Mallorca will be classified as a virus variant area.

The proportion of the delta variant in infections in Germany is already high.

The RKI explains: “What is decisive for the classification of a country abroad as a special risk area due to the occurrence of a virus variant (

virus variant area

) is the spread of a virus variant (mutation) which does not occur at the same time in Germany and which can be assumed to be a

poses a

particular risk. ”
