Brussels, SANA- A document from the European Union revealed that the EU countries have so far only donated a small percentage of the surplus

Brussels-Sana

A document from the European Union revealed that the European Union countries have so far only donated a small percentage of the surplus (Covid 19) vaccines to poor countries, most of them from the AstraZeneca vaccine, and that this percentage represents less than three percent of the 160 million doses they intend to donate to help contain the global pandemic.

The European Union had promised to help vaccinate the poorest groups in various parts of the world, but its member states have so far focused on buying doses to vaccinate their citizens, which contributed to the shortage of vaccines in the rest of the world.

So far, the EU countries, with a population of 365 million people, have received about 500 million doses from pharmaceutical companies and expect to have 1 billion doses by the end of September.

However, as of July 13, these countries donated less than four million doses, according to the document prepared by the European Commission and reported by Reuters.

The document says that the countries of the Union collectively pledged to provide about 160 million doses without mentioning a specific preference for their destination.

Brussels has previously said that the EU countries intend to donate at least 100 million doses by the end of this year, without specifying a time frame to achieve the goal contained in the document.

Donations have so far gone to countries and regions linked to the donor country, as part of the Member States' efforts to strengthen relations with countries close to them and deepen diplomatic relations.

The World Health Organization has called on Western governments to donate doses to the "Cofax" program, which it runs with the Jaffee Vaccine Charity Initiative, to ensure a fair distribution of the most needy countries in the world.

The document states that most of the donated vaccines will be channeled through the programme.

Many poor countries depend on Cofax, but the program has so far delivered only 135 million doses worldwide and relies largely on donating doses.
