Nuremberg - Now it's official.

According to a resolution of the city council, the request for expansion was approved on Wednesday evening (July 21).

From the main train station onwards, Königstraße should be car-free in the future - and soon.

Nuremberg city center: Königstraße should be car-free

In order to make the city center more attractive, numerous projects are currently being carried out by the City of Nuremberg and the Nuremberg City Workshop. So-called pop-up stores are also part of the redesign. Now an expansion of the pedestrian zone is intended to strengthen retail and gastronomy in the city. "The Königstrasse pedestrian zone is an important building block on the way to a better quality of stay," Nasser Ahmed, chairman of the Nuremberg SPD, is quoted in the parliamentary statement.

But that's not enough for the SPD.

“Our goal is to upgrade the entire old town.

It is therefore logical that we should also take a look at the side streets next, ”explains Ahmed.

The surrounding streets and alleys of Königstraße should not be disadvantaged by any alternative traffic.

Therefore, the SPD advocates traffic calming measures there.

The Kornmarkt, Grasersgasse and Klaragasse are affected.

The road will be closed soon - there will be no parking spaces for benches

According to

Bayerischer Rundfunk

, the road will be temporarily closed in the next few months.

Trees should be placed in planters.

There is space for benches and bike racks in the parking lots.

This also has some advantages for the catering industry in the summer: the restaurants can expand their open spaces.

In the future, not only Königstrasse, but also Burgstrasse should only be accessible to pedestrians.
