The Corona crisis has left a clear mark on the cultural sector.

The curtain on the Tegernsee could now slowly open again for the theater stages.

But the uncertainty is still great.

Tegernseer Tal

- Andreas Kern is a creative spirit.

He writes plays for his Tegernsee Volkstheater with his own hands and takes to the stage as an actor with his family.

The fact that he was suddenly thwarted by the corona lockdown and did not know how and when it would go on was the worst that could have happened for him.

“The uncertainty was disastrous.

Corona has called into question everything that I have done so far, "says the head of the traditional stage, describing his situation.

But Kern does not want to be beaten down.

After he had to cancel the first planned performances in the Wiesseer Postsaal and in Bad Füssing in spring due to low demand (“we had zero advance sales”), the program for summer and autumn is now at Tegernsee.

Some theater fans are permanently lost to indoor events

Corona-compliant performances with a small ensemble are to be held from July 30th in the post office in Bad Wiessee and in the Tegernsee Ludwig-Thoma-Saal.

The theater manager does not yet know whether the plan will work out.

Because of the distance rules, only 54 people are allowed in the Thoma room, an FFP2 mask is still to be worn on the square.

"People are still afraid and don't want to sit in a closed theater," believes Kern.

He even suspects that 10 to 20 percent of the previous audience is permanently lost to indoor events.

There will be an open-air stage in the Tegernsee spa garden

Kern is therefore relocating some of the performances outdoors.

On four evenings in the summer (August 20/21 and September 3-4) an open-air stage will be installed in front of the pavilion in the Tegernsee spa garden with the support of the city and the tourist information office.

There you can experience “De Gschicht vom Brandner Kasper”.

After all, around 220 theater fans could find space here with additional seating.

Kern looks forward to these ideas with confidence: “I don't have any tails, we can do that.” Of course, the weather remains a factor of uncertainty.

Advance sales at the tourist information offices at Tegernsee and MünchenTicket are already running.

Ludwig-Thoma-Bühne wants to wait for further corona easing

While the Tegernsee Volkstheater has fixed dates, the second traditional stage from Tegernsee is still hesitant: Michael Janiczek and his Ludwig Thoma stage, which usually play in Rottach-Egern for holidaymakers and locals, have due to the still applicable Corona Restrictions for this summer no appearances at Tegernsee planned. "We still want to wait and see whether the situation relaxes," explains Janiczek, who himself lives in Thiersee, Austria and had speculated that similar easing for cultural events will come into force in Bavaria as in Austria. The fact that the rules of distance still apply in the Rottacher Seeforum and that the mask is a must, makes the theater director doubt whether visitors would actually come."We don't want to force anything - the concept has to be coherent," says Janiczek.

Theater boss assures: "Are firmly connected with Rottach-Egern"

As soon as the conditions allowed, the Thoma stage wants to play again at Tegernsee, the theater boss assures.

"We are firmly connected to Rottach-Egern through decades of tradition." A return to the stage would be quick and easy despite the long Corona break, explains Janiczek.

The Thoma stage has a repertoire of six to seven pieces, which it could quickly bring to the audience with little rehearsal effort.

Janiczek is grateful that both the district of Upper Bavaria and the municipality of Rottach-Egern continue to secure the survival of the ensemble with grants.

The Rottach municipal council has granted the theater 2500 euros as support this year as well.

“We don't want to leave the Thoma stage out in the rain,” explains Gerhard Hofmann, manager of the Rottach town hall, when asked.

After all, the facility in Rottach-Egern looks back on over 100 years of history.

Since then, however, a lot has changed: While the Volkstheater was still booming 30 or 40 years ago, the Ludwig-Thoma-Stage has not only struggled with a decline in visitors since Corona.

The pandemic hasn't made the situation any easier.
