Two riots in two prisons in Ecuador left at least 18 inmates dead and nine police officers injured, the National Comprehensive Care Service for Adults Deprived of Liberty reported this Wednesday through a statement.
The riots were registered in the prisons of Libertad Guayas number one and Cotopaxi number one, the statement cites.
The authorities reported that the Guayas riot occurred in the afternoon in pavilions seven and eight and left a balance of 8 dead prisoners and 3 wounded police officers, who, according to the authorities, are stable.
The riot in the Cotopaxi prison has so far left 10 prisoners dead, as well as 35 prisoners and 6 police officers injured.
The security and prison surveillance bodies, together with elite groups of the police, have already retaken control of both prisons, the statement concludes.
