The deputy AfD chairwoman Beatrix von Storch met with a son of President Jair Bolsonaro in the Brazilian capital Brasilia.
This is now being sharply criticized in his home country.
The chairman of the Labor Party of ex-President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Gleisi Hoffmann, wrote on Twitter about Eduardo Bolsonaro's meeting with the member of the Bundestag: “The meeting is regrettable.
They have everything in common: xenophobia, hate speech and anti-democratic attitudes. «The member of the Bundestag was received in the capital Brasilia by an ally of the right-wing populist head of state.
Further criticism came from the movement "Jews for Democracy" and from Brazil's most important Holocaust museum.
The Museo de Holocausto in the southern Brazilian city of Curitiba spoke of a burden "for building a collective memory of the Holocaust in Brazil and for our own democracy".
The president's son himself defended the meeting on Twitter: "We are united by the ideals of defending the family, protecting borders and national culture," it said.
After meeting Storch, MP Bia Kicis wrote: "The world's conservatives are uniting to defend Christian values and the family."
