Denmark becomes a risk area - what does that mean for my vacation?

The Robert Koch Institute has classified Denmark as a simple risk area.

This goes hand in hand with far-reaching restrictions, including quarantine upon return.

Copenhagen - Corona incidences across Europe have only known one direction in the past few weeks: upwards.

It was only a matter of time, but now the federal government has recognized and acted: From Sunday, July 25, 2021, neighboring Denmark (with the exception of Greenland) will be designated as a risk area.

This was announced by the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Friday, July 23, 2021.

Also on Friday, the federal government classified Spain and the Netherlands as a high incidence area. 

In general, when entering Denmark, you must either have recovered or be vaccinated.

Otherwise, a negative corona test can also be presented.

The number of infections in Denmark * has been skyrocketing for days.

On Friday, the 7-day incidence, i.e. the number of infections in connection with Sars-CoV-2 extrapolated to 100,000 residents within seven days, was 104.0.

815 new infections were registered but no further deaths related to Covid-19.

Although Denmark had already exceeded an incidence value of 120 on July 20, 2021, since the new classifications by the RKI only take place on Friday, Denmark does not become a risk area until Sunday.

Nevertheless, there has been a lot of relaxation in Denmark *.

In the course of this, it became known on Friday that a complete German holiday group in the Scandinavian country had been quarantined * after a corona outbreak.

71 of around 100 participants in a holiday camp organized by a Hamburg provider tested positive for the corona virus.

Denmark as a risk area: what applies now to German travelers, tourists and vacationers?

The Federal Foreign Office advises holidaymakers against taking a tourist trip to Denmark by Sunday at the latest.

Those who still vacation there have to be quarantined for five to ten days after their return.

Unless he's vaccinated or recovered.

But be careful for those who have recovered: The infection with the coronavirus must not be more than six months ago and must be documented in writing by a PCR test.

A digital entry registration must also be completed before entering Germany.

The necessary quarantine can be ended prematurely with a negative corona test (PCR or antigen rapid test) before crossing the border or at the latest 48 hours afterwards, explains the Allgemeine Deutsche Automobil-Club (ADAC).

The ADAC also points out that although all border crossings are open, there may be random checks.

Incidence in Denmark is increasing - new entry regulation could come into force on August 1, 2021

But be careful, once again there are no rules without exceptions: Lately, spontaneous quick tests can be ordered when entering Germany by plane.

This applies to all holidaymakers aged 6 and over.

But a lot can change soon.

The federal government is currently working on a new entry regulation.

According to the current plan, this should apply from August 1, 2021.

As it currently looks, risk areas should then be completely eliminated, which is currently at least more than 80 countries that are classified by Germany in this classification.

When entering Denmark from Germany, a negative corona test is still required.

The ADAC explains that it must not be more than 72 hours old if it is a PCR test.

If it is a rapid antigen test, it must be a maximum of 48 hours old.

Vaccinated or convalescent people are exempt from this if they have appropriate evidence.

• Shops and shopping malls are open, but with restrictions.

• Although museums and other leisure facilities are open in Denmark, those who want to visit them need a negative corona test no more than 72 hours old or have to prove that they are vaccinated.

• The indoor areas of zoos and amusement parks are also open in Denmark.

  Saunas and bathing establishments are also open.

• There is a curfew for restaurants, bars and cafés.

  That means they have to close at 2:00 a.m.

  If you want to visit the gastronomy, you have to reserve a table and have a negative corona test.

  Alternatively, the vaccination card is also used as proof.

• Alcoholic beverages may only be sold in petrol stations or kiosks until 2:00 a.m. in the morning.

• Many hotels, pensions and holiday homes have reopened in Denmark, but not all of them accommodate guests from abroad.

  Therefore, you should make sure that you are welcome at all before booking.

• The mask requirement has already been lifted in most areas.

  However, mouth and nose protection must still be worn in local public transport.

  However, this only applies to standing passengers.

  The obligation to wear a mask is to be completely abolished on September 1st.

• Anyone who meets with people who do not come from their own household must keep a distance of at least two meters from one another.

• Up to 25 participants can do sports together in the fresh air.

• A maximum occupancy of 100 people is permitted for an indoor event, a maximum of 500 visitors applies to outdoor events.

Risk area Denmark: should I cancel my vacation?

In general, the following applies: A trip to a risk area is not recommended.

It is therefore always advisable to take out travel cancellation insurance at the moment, as there is no general right to free cancellation for countries that are classified as simple risk areas.

At best, one is dependent on the goodwill of the tour operator.

However, it is important that the insured persons find out whether the insurance also covers a pandemic.

Many do not do this, but old insurance companies often have the option of including pandemics by upgrading their insurance.

Should I take out Covid travel insurance and international health insurance for my Denmark vacation?

If you are traveling with an airline that denies its passengers entry, for example if there is a fever, it may be advisable to take out Covid travel protection.

This is also recommended if access to the accommodation in Denmark is denied due to corona symptoms.

In principle, vaccinated and recovered people can also be affected.

In general, foreign health insurance is advisable when you are on holiday abroad.

Although the German health card is also valid within the European Union, you can save yourself a lot of running around by spending around ten euros.
