The vaccination rate in Germany has been declining for a few weeks.

Virologist Christian Drosten is worried.

Berlin - The vaccination rate has been falling in Germany for weeks.

Only 565,235 corona vaccinations were reported on Thursday, July 22nd.

In May and June, well over 1 million people were often vaccinated on weekdays.

The 7-day average has even fallen to 481,028 and is below 500,000 for the first time since April 13th.

There are now millions of vaccination doses on the dump, while there were too few doses at the beginning of the vaccination campaign.

Now the interest in the population seems to be slowly exhausted.

Corona in Germany: Virologist Drosten criticizes vaccination speed

For virologist Christian Drosten, vaccination is currently not going fast enough either.

He was "increasingly concerned about the vaccination progress," said the head of virology at the Berlin Charité in a written interview with the German press agency.

"We're not making fast enough progress here, although enough vaccine is available."

The current vaccination rate in Germany is 60.6 percent first and 48.5 percent second vaccinations.

Not a bad value, but in view of the more contagious Delta variant, which also dominates in this country, still too low.

The RKI demands a vaccination quota of at least 85 percent.

The incidence in Germany has also been rising again for weeks.

Corona: Vaccination speed is not only falling in Germany - Drosten warns of a false sense of security

However, the problem doesn't seem to be unique here. In the long-standing exemplary countries such as the United Kingdom and Israel, the rate of vaccination decreased when a rate of around 60 percent was reached for initial vaccinations. This was the case in Israel at the end of March, and since then only 6.5 percent have increased. The United Kingdom hit the figure in early June and has only gained 8.4 percent since then. At the moment, the willingness to vaccinate in the population seems to be only 60-70 percent across countries.

According to Drosten, many people believed they had a false sense of security in view of the low incidence in Germany. “It is important to do a lot more information work now - also in the private sphere, so that the vaccination rate increases faster. This reduces the likelihood of repeated painful interventions in winter, ”explained Drosten. The virologist would also like to see that restrictions on social life are not necessary again. (md)
