Erding - Fast Internet is important for many citizens, but especially for companies.

This was shown not least by the corona pandemic.

Businesses primarily rely on fiber optic connections.

The city of Erding is now tackling the expansion.

Deutsche Glasfaser, which is already active in many municipalities in the district, received the order for this.

The city councils in the urban development committee decided this unanimously.

In just 18 months, Deutsche Glasfaser, based in Borken (North Rhine-Westphalia), says it can lay the lines, right up to the building. It starts when the cooperation agreement is signed. This will happen when the city has received funding notices from the federal government and the Free State. This takes on 80 percent of the eligible costs, so that only 20 percent remains for the municipality. This corresponds to around 200,000 euros.

Tom Haselmayr, Managing Director of Tohaplan in Augsburg, carried out the award procedure and presented the results to the committee. In principle, he rates the supply situation in Erding as very good: “The speeds are impressive.” 98 percent of all households have bandwidths of 50 Mbit / s, 64 percent even 1000 Mbit / s. The white spots have been removed from the card, says Haselmayr. He recalled that seven years ago, “two to three Mbit / s were still the order of the day” in the outdoor areas.

The commitment through the funding process is paying off. But there is still room for improvement, especially in the quota of fiber optic connections. These are especially important for traders - and they are subsidized by the state - with 50, 60 or 70 percent depending on the economic power of the municipality and if the download speed is less than 30 Mbit / s. In commercial areas, it is 30 Mbit / s per workstation, says Haselmayr.

According to his findings, there are 100 eligible addresses in Erding, which corresponds to 200 companies.

All commercial areas in the city can benefit (default: 1 gigabit / s symmetrical).

According to Haselmayr, mixed and special areas are not eligible.

He also rated the offers from the two companies that applied for the expansion: Deutsche Glasfaser and Telekom.

Among other things, the economic efficiency, the earliest point in time of commissioning, the end customer prices and the service concept were taken into account.

According to Haselmayr, the “clear winner” of the comparison is Deutsche Glasfaser - mainly because it only promises 18 months to go into operation.

Telekom would have needed 48 months, i.e. four years, for this.

14 kilometers of cables have to be laid in civil engineering.

The German glass fiber is meanwhile in Germany the third largest provider in the glass fiber area after Telekom and Vodafone and has only shown a profitability gap of around one million euros.

Haselmayr described the monthly costs for the end customer connection of 250 to 850 euros, depending on the tariff, as the market price.

Where a connection is not wanted, it will only be relocated to the property line, "so nothing is lost".

For Mayor Max Gotz (CSU), the city's commitment here is “direct economic development.

We are well in the running and will continue now. "
