In the corona pandemic, homeschooling and alternating classes left learning gaps in children and young people.

To compensate for this, schools in the district are now also offering “Summer School 21”.

District

- Voluntary school - and that during the summer vacation: What would have been unthinkable for most of the people in the past is becoming a reality this year. Schools in the Erding district are also offering courses this year to help children and young people close learning gaps caused by pandemics. The “Summer School” has existed in the USA for a long time, and in Bavaria the Ministry of Education and Culture is recommending the “Summer School '21” for the first time this year as part of the “Together. Bridges. to build". Jens Baumgärtel, head of the technical and vocational school in Erding, explains: "The offer should give everyone a good start to the new school year."

It's about deepening and repeating learning content from previous school years. According to the education authority, students should be considered in particular who advance to the next higher grade on probation, are aiming to graduate in the school year 2021/22 or have lost their orientation due to family and individual circumstances and have distanced themselves from learning in the school context. However, the Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs clearly underestimated the stress to which schools and pupils were exposed, explains Thomas Kiesewetter, Chairman of the Parents' Council at the FOS / BOS Erding.

The subjects offered vary.

The main focus is on the core subjects of mathematics, English and German.

In addition, as at the Korbinian-Aigner-Gymnasium (KAG) in Erding, Latin or French can also be taken.

At the Marie-Pettenbeck-Schule Wartenberg, a primary and secondary school, the class leaders choose the subjects.

The courses should take place in the first and last week of the holiday.

All-day events are planned.

"We hope that this offer will give our students the tools they need to be able to independently, effectively and successfully repeat and deepen the contents of the curriculum during the summer holidays," says a KAG parenting letter.

At the FOS / BOS Erding there will be learning days for the eleventh grade.

The learning strategy days at the KAG are offered in age blocks: for grades 5 and 6, 7 to 9 as well as 10 and 11. In Wartenberg, grades 1 to 6 are the focus.

"The younger age groups could not be reached so easily and intensively through online lessons," admits school principal Michael Braun, "which is why they are specifically addressed".

For the summer school, the Wartenberg school also receives an external assistant from the education authority.

There are different ways to determine the need: surveys with parents and teachers, recommendations and consultation appointments with specialist teachers.

Braun reports that the class leaders suggested that the children and young people take part in the intensive days.

At the moment, there are also surveys of learning levels in the examination subjects, such as at the FOS / BOS Erding.

They should give the students feedback on their current level of performance.

The results may then point to deficits that can be reduced by September.

This is exactly what the summer school should ultimately be used for.

"As an additional measure, we distributed an overview of grades at an early stage, which can show the students the corresponding learning deficits," says the headmaster of the FOS / BOS.

Finally, registration forms will be handed out.

No final information can yet be given about the actual demand, as registration runs until the end of July.

The feedback is differentiated, however.

"Some parents accepted the offer, others canceled it," said the education authority.

From today's perspective, it is difficult to say whether the “Summer School” will achieve the desired success.

It is only one component in eliminating learning deficits caused by pandemics, explains Baumgärtel.

That is how Kiesewetter sees it.

In general, it is good that such measures are being taken now, but the process must go beyond that.

He shouldn't limit himself to just a few days during the summer vacation.

“We just have to wait and see how the children accept and accept the offer,” confirms Braun.

The summer school is only one element of the “Together.

Bridges.

to build".

Therefore, "measures to compensate for disadvantages caused by pandemics for schoolchildren must and will be continued in the coming school year", explains the school authority director Marion Bauer.
