From Russia with love.
This is the title of the report that the presidential advisor, Cecilia Nicolini, gave the site
El rocket a la luna
, directed by journalist Horacio Verbitsky,
on January 31 last
. There he explained with great optimism how the vaccination plan in Argentina was going to be developed based on the agreement with President Vladimir Putin, with the Gamaleya laboratory and with the Russian Direct Investment Fund. Very close to Alberto Fernández, Nicolini is in
charge of negotiating the vaccines
against Covid for Argentina and Verbitsky is the one who
confirmed the existence of a Vip Vaccination
, which worked in the Ministry of Health and where, fortunately for him, he was one of the vaccinated.
-How often do you talk to the CEO of the Russian Direct Investment Fund? -
they asked Nicolini.
-Very often.
I just spoke.
I drive him a little crazy.
But it is available and we have generated a relationship of great trust ... They are very serious.
When they commit to something they make a great effort to comply and I am aware of that because I was working with them in Russia.
I saw them.
That relationship of trust that Nicolini spoke of
has just been broken.
Or maybe it had been broken some time ago. But the certainty of that uncertainty came with the publication (that of the journalist Carlos Pagni, in La Nación) of the mail that Nicolini sent to Anatoly Braverman, the second of Kirill Dmitriev, who is the CEO of the Russian Fund and who, for a long time ,
is somewhat ignorant
of the affairs of Argentina.
“We are in a very critical situation;
We were hoping that after the conversation you (Anatoly), Carla (Vizzotti), Kirill (Dmitiriev) and I had,
things would get better. But they have gotten worse ”,
the official acknowledged. It was clear that the effort he had seen with his own eyes in Russia was no longer the same.
What is clear with Nicolini's email, a text with avoidable translation errors, is
the bureaucratic amateurism
of the official and the lightness with which the Government approached
the most important negotiation
that it has in hand, along with the one that Martín Guzmán carries. with the International Monetary Fund. But more serious than all that is
the spirit that flies over
communication with the Russians. There they are reproached for the delay in delivering the vaccines when the Sputnik variant was privileged over any negotiation with the US laboratories. Precisely what would have greatly improved the provision of the remedy against Covid and
prevented hundreds, perhaps thousands, of deaths
of unvaccinated Argentines.
It was evident that ideology, in addition to inefficiency,
monopolizes the dynamics of the government
of Alberto Fernández and Cristina Kirchner in the negotiations to obtain the vaccines that all of society needs. The photos of the officials celebrating the supposed victory of the great Russian homeland by being vaccinated, and
the adolescent declarations against the vaccines of Pfizer
, or Moderna, or Johnson & Johnson, show to what extent Argentina has become an obtuse and inexplicable country. The DNU approved in a hurry by the Government, in order to access the three and a half million vaccines donated by the US, constitute
a sad defeat for rationality.
On February 22, 2012, a train collided with the Once station, injuring 800 passengers and killing another 52. Few times in Argentina was so exposed how the corruption of irresponsible officials and businessmen could build such a direct path to death .
"Corruption kills"
was the phrase that was repeated then even in court decisions.
Ideology, those
collective ideas and emotions
that define many human beings, can also turn into
an uncertain path
if the impulse to put it before the interest of the majority is given in.
History is riddled with
precipitous tragedies in the name of ideologies.
Argentina has just crossed the barrier of one hundred thousand deaths and is approaching the record of five million infected with Covid.
With the threat of the Delta variant knocking on the door, it is time to leave any ideology
out of the official decisions
that should only be taken care of in these hours to avoid the triumph of the plague.
