The Greens are divided on whether they want to actively stop the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline in the event of government participation.
“The pipeline was and remains a bogus project, with or without a blessing from the US president.
We Greens will continue to try to prevent them, ”foreign policy official Omid Nouripour told SPIEGEL.
The federal government has just reached an agreement with the USA on the conditions for completion, and US President Joe Biden no longer threatens sanctions.
The Greens completely oppose Nord Stream 2 for both ecological and geopolitical reasons.
However, the former Green Federal Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin is not counting on preventing the project: "With the agreement, the pipeline will be completed." Stopping it would mean high damages.
It is now a matter of »reducing gas demand and thus making the pipeline superfluous«.
Both Green politicians also assured that they did not want to make agreed aid for Ukraine in the development of renewable energies available. The new pipeline will allow Russian gas to come to Germany without flowing through Ukraine. The country fears the loss of high transit income. A promise of understanding between Germany and the USA is also to secure gas transit through Ukraine.
The pipeline is viewed critically, especially in the east of the European Union, because it increases Russia's influence and allows the country to become independent of the previous transit states such as Ukraine.
Poland and Ukraine sent a notice warning that Nord Stream 2 would create "a political, military and energy threat to Ukraine and Central Europe."
