We tested various drip coffee makers and evaluated the temperature, taste, and ease of brewing our cup of coffee. | CNN Underscored in Spanish | CNN

While we like a classic drip machine and can also appreciate the quick convenience of the time it takes to brew coffee from a capsule, a pour is the best way to recreate the rich, robust, and full-flavored coffee you get in a pod. specialized store.

In addition to the calming ritual involved with making coffee, the method is favored by professional and hobbyist baristas alike because a precise pouring can extract the most flavor from the beans in your cup.

To help determine which pour maker to add to your coffee brewing routine, we gathered highly-rated models and tested them. Six flat-bottomed, cone-shaped versions and two larger all-in-one jug-style designs, and while many looked quite similar, varying in materials (glass, porcelain, plastic, and stainless steel), they required special filters and different amounts of coffee needed for a single pour.

After testing each version three times, we found the winner: the Kalita Wave 185 three-hole flat bottom design that allowed for the most uniform and consistent brewing of all tested models.

Yes, you will have to buy special Kalita brand filters that fit inside the dropper, but it is the most robust and kept the spot heat temperature and the most uniform flavor saturation.

Sure, at first glance the Kalita Wave 185 looks pretty much the same as the other coffee drippers we tested, but it doesn't take long to discover that the nuances of its design lead to a superior drink.

Unlike its cone-shaped contenders, the Japanese-sourced Kalita features a flat bottom with three drip holes, allowing for easier and more uniform saturated ground coffee.

The flat bottom shape and larger surface area resulted in a rich and robust cup of coffee, and it was also the easiest to use of the droppers that required a swirling pour, producing between 16 to 26 ounces at a time.

Its shape allows the water to stay in contact with the coffee for a longer time, which allows a more consistent and sustained extraction.

The actual brewing time is pretty quick - during our tests, it took just over two minutes from the first pour of water to the last drip of coffee that landed in our cup.

The whole time the temperature stayed nice and warm.

Another plus: The Kalita has a 4-inch wide base so it can rest on top of a wide-mouth cup, not all drippers tested can accommodate that.

It is also very easy to clean: the plastic base is easy to manipulate.

Best used with special Kalita Wave brand filters.

They are available on Amazon, but are sometimes out of stock, so we recommend buying them in bulk.

Overall, the Kalita Wave consistently delivers great tasting, full-bodied hot coffee and its flat bottom design means that even newbies to the art will have great coffee shop-worthy results.

The basics of drip coffee makers

How to use a drip coffee maker?

New to this?

To make coffee, a dropper is placed in a cup or carafe and hot water is poured over the previously measured coffee, which is then filtered into the cup.

Pour speed, swirl technique, amount of water, and filter type can be adjusted to meet your favorite flavor profile.

And while it all seems simple enough, most drippings are smaller than a bowl of cereal and come without other accessories, perfecting the pour takes practice and experimentation.

What you will need

You will need to boil water.

You can of course use ground beans, but for the best and freshest flavor, you'll want to use a grinder that you can put the whole beans in.

For each drip, we pour water evenly and smoothly, swirling it from the center, then we wait 30 seconds for the coffee to settle again (carbon dioxide is released when the hot water hits the coffee, causing it to bubble).

Then we add the remaining water.

We also used a timer to measure how long each drip took from the first pour to the last drip.

How do we test?

Performance

  • Drink quality:

We looked at how the coffee tasted after being brewed, including if it was too bitter or weak, if there were flavors or acidity that shouldn't be there, and if too much heat, or not enough, affected its flavor.

  • This mini fridge for cans, makeup and medicine costs less than MX $ 1,000

  • Filters

: It was evaluated whether or not the coffee dropper required a special paper filter.

We also look at the prices and availability of those specific filters.

  • Ease of use:

From unboxing and setup to brewing, we took notes on how easy each machine was to use, including whether the design was intuitive or too complicated and whether additional steps were needed compared to other models.
