Polish law restricting the filing of claims on Jewish property from the Holocaust period passed today (Friday) in the Polish Senate.

Two amendments were made to the law - granting an extension of an additional three months for the filing of property claims and not retroactively applying the law to existing claims that are clarified.

The law has not yet been finalized and will come in the coming days for another vote in the lower house of the Polish parliament.

The law will then be passed to the signature of the president, Andrzej Duda, and only then will it enter into force.

The law, previously passed by parliament last month, would make it difficult for Jews to reclaim property confiscated by the Nazis during World War II and left in the hands of communist rule after it.

Foreign Minister Yair Lapid said in response that the legislation would severely damage Israel's relations with Poland.

"Poland knows very well what is the right and proper thing to do," Lapid said.

"Israel is following with great concern the progress of the legislative process in Poland regarding property restitution, which was robbed from the victims of the Holocaust. Every stage in this progress is a serious development in our eyes.

The Minister for Social Equality, Meirav Cohen, condemned the passage of the law in the Polish Senate and said that "the Polish insistence on denying the right to claim Jewish property may harm relations between the states. History cannot be changed. I hope the Polish government acts as the conscience requires Its conduct revolves around the memory of the Holocaust. "

About a month ago, Poland's ambassador to Israel, Mark Magirowski, was summoned for a reprimand call at the Foreign Ministry. This is due to the law passed in the lower house without the amendment. In response to the ambassador's summons, the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw summoned the Israeli Embassy in Poland, Tal Ben-Ari, for a reprimand call a day later.

Poland is home to one of the largest Jewish communities in the world, but most of it was destroyed during the Holocaust.

After the fall of the communist regime in 1989, former Jewish property owners began to work for compensation.

The Constitutional Court of Poland ruled in 2015 that the length of time that property claims can be heard should be limited.

In March, a parliamentary committee proposed a law that would implement this ruling, and the law stipulates that after 30 years the undecided claims will be closed.
