The United Nations Security Council today condemned the “unilateral actions” of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan regarding Cyprus, denouncing the announcement by Turkish Cypriot leaders to reopen part of the closed Varosha area on the island.

AFP quoted diplomats as saying that the Security Council had approved a unanimous declaration calling for a settlement of the Cyprus conflict "on the basis of a federal system with two communities and two regions with political equality," condemning Erdogan's "unilateral actions" in this regard.

The council members also condemned “the declaration of the Turkish and Cypriot leaders in Cyprus on July 20 regarding the reopening of part of the closed Varosha area,” expressing their deep regret for these “unilateral measures that contradict its previous decisions and statements,” as stated in the approved text that is supposed to be officially adopted. Today.

The council also demanded the "immediate reversal" of this measure and "all the changes that have taken place in Varosha since October 2020".

The text prepared by the United Kingdom added that "the Security Council stresses the importance of full respect for and implementation of its decisions, including the transfer of Varosha to the administration of the United Nations."

Erdogan had earlier announced a plan to continue the process of reopening the abandoned city of Varosha, which symbolizes the division of the Mediterranean island, which sparked international condemnation of these positions.

Cyprus is divided between the Republic of Cyprus, a member of the European Union, which exercises its authority over the southern part, and the so-called "Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus", which was declared unilaterally in 1983 and is recognized only by Ankara.

Negotiations on the settlement of the conflict in Cyprus have been suspended since 2017, when an attempt by United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres to revive dialogue between the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides failed last April.
