The defendant from Waldkraiburg (Rosenheim district) put 26 people in mortal danger.

Now the Munich Higher Regional Court has found him guilty.

Waldkraiburg / Munich * - The motif was hatred of the Turks, the drive came from a "bizarre private religion".

At least that is how the presiding judge Jochen Bösl put it on Friday when he gave reasons for the verdict.

The defendant set fire to a fruit and vegetable shop at night in the spring of 2020 without caring about the residents who lived above the shop.

Allegedly, because of his schizophrenia, he hadn't kept an eye on people.

“We don't believe that,” said the presiding judge, speaking of a protective claim - regardless of the defendant's statement that he had swallowed a “green pill” a few hours before the attack.

Allegedly because he couldn't get marijuana.

The judges nevertheless certified that the 27-year-old had a reduced ability to control because of his undifferentiated schizophrenia in connection with his years of cannabis use.

Attacks in Waldkraiburg: residents were scared to death - 79-year-olds died of cardiac arrest

The night of the attack had terrified many residents. Some had woken up from the crashing windows and could still escape through the underground car park. Others had to be led outside with protective hoods by the fire brigade. A wheelchair user and two firefighters stayed in his apartment until 4:30 a.m. in the morning.

A 79-year-old had to be rescued with a turntable ladder.

She later died of circulatory failure resulting from cardiac arrest.

It could not be proven whether this was triggered by the excitement of the attack.

At least the judge described the terrible attack as not causal for the occurrence of death.

The woman had had heart disease before the night of the crime.

Therefore, the accused could not be convicted of committed murder, said judge Bösl.

Attacks in Waldkraiburg: Defendant apparently prepared for a long time for the attempted murder

There were enough indications of the attempted murder as a planned action and not as a spontaneous act.

Accordingly, the defendant had specialized in bomb construction long before the attack.

After the attack, he showed no remorse at first, showed a picture of the fire with a smile and always wanted to watch a video of the flames.

“It went so well with the fire in the greengrocer,” he was quoted as saying.

He is said to have initially shown no shock at the consequences of the act.

The attack was followed by a stink bomb attack.

Defendant developed "hatred of the Turks" - wanted "civil war-like conditions"

How, however, as a well-integrated young man who played football enthusiastically, had a degree and a job and did not meet any extremely religious parents at home, could slide so deeply into violence and Salafism, remained a mystery to the judges too.

In 2013, the defendant took German citizenship and discarded Turkish.

"Without schizophrenia, the deeds and attacks are unthinkable," the judge began in an attempt to explain, the accused hated "all people of Turkish origin".

His plan was to incite the Turkish community in Germany to violent acts "and to bring about civil war-like conditions".

Without the IS ideology, however, the deeds cannot be explained either.
