At the beginning of the year, the majority of the Peißenberg municipal council passed a ban on gravel gardens (we reported).

The set of rules is now being flanked by an awareness campaign.

An information flyer published by the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment is supposed to help.

Peißenberg - "We are experiencing an extinction of species - and not too close", says Dr. Stephan Niederleitner. The ministerial councilor should know what he is talking about. After all, he works in the Bavarian Ministry of the Environment, among other things, as a "blooming pact manager". And in this function Niederleitner was recently a guest at the Peißenberg town hall. He had 5,000 information leaflets with him with the title “Gardens in bloom instead of lifeless gravel deserts”.

There was, of course, a reason that Niederleitner paid a visit to Peißenberg, of all places: the majority of the market council passed a ban on gravel gardens in January. The decision made waves in the media. After the city of Erlangen, Peißenberg was only the second municipality in Bavaria to issue such a set of rules. "The initiative was great," said Niederleitner, praising the prohibition statute that was passed in the market council at the request of the Greens. But the topic should not be limited to the issuing of regulations, but "it should be accompanied by information and clarification", as Matthias Bichlmayr emphasizes. A few months ago, the spokesman for the Greens was in close contact with Dr. Monika Offenberger. The freelance science journalist, which has already written several information brochures for the Ministry of the Environment, suggested that the awareness-raising campaign should be extended. In retrospect, Bichlmayr speaks of a "stroke of luck". Ultimately, a “professional information flyer” was designed by the ministry.

"It's a nice thing when you show people alternatives and provide explanations," says Niederleitner, convinced of the purpose of the flyer. He describes gravel gardens as “gardens of horror” - and that is no coincidence. The flyer clearly shows, for example, that the gravel deserts are anything but easy to maintain and, because of the sealed surface, can also result in higher wastewater charges. In addition, it is described that barren gravel gardens at high temperatures additionally heat up the internal climate and the lack of flora and fauna can also affect the soul, especially that of children. The 5000 flyers are now being distributed to households in Peißenberg via the community newspaper “Wir über uns”. Mayor Frank Zellner fully supports the action. The town hall chief and his faction of the “CSU / non-party” had voted against the prohibition statute - not because one likes gravel gardens, but because one hopes for the common sense and voluntary insight of the citizens. "The flyer is a really great thing," says Zellner, while Bichlmayr still sees no alternative to the ban: "I come from pedagogy and therefore know that a lot of things need a regulatory framework."In the masses, there is a need for a regulatory framework. "In the masses, there is a need for a regulatory framework. "
