Kochel am See / Jachenau

- The Walchensee is a popular destination - but above all an important retreat for rare animals and plants.

Two unusual missions now had to do with the protection of the intact nature, which occupied the water rescue service and the Walchensee ranger Johann Adlwarth.

Alleged calls for help from the island of Sassau

As the Wasserwacht Walchensee reports, passers-by had set off an alarm on Wednesday around 8.30 p.m. because they believed they heard calls for help from the island of Sassau. The volunteers met three men and a child from the Stuttgart area. Their screams had nothing to do with an emergency, but with the fun they put on. They had headed for the island with a rubber boat and, according to their own statements, did not see any of the signs prohibiting entry. Because two of them were hypothermic, the water watch brought them to shore.

If someone does not know about the entry ban, "we go into dialogue with them," says Ranger Adlwarth.

According to Wasserwacht, the people of Stuttgart also showed their understanding.

"But some know it, and still stand-up paddlers or boaters keep coming to the island," says Adlwarth regretfully.

You are not even allowed to approach Sassau within 50 meters.

Walchensee: New signs should point out that you are not allowed to enter the island of Sassau

The ranger recalls that the island is an important habitat for the Mediterranean seagull, various species of ducks, bats and yew trees, among other things.

"Here you want to leave nature to its own devices undisturbed", explains Adlwarth and asks: "Do you have to go everywhere?

Can't you leave this little space to nature?

I can't go to other people's bedrooms and make a riot there either. "

So that the entry ban is less overlooked, new signs are to be put up soon - on the island itself as well as in the nearby shore area near Niedernach.

In order to be allowed to enter the island for this work, the rangers themselves need a special permit from the government of Upper Bavaria.

A fireplace is hidden behind a wall on the banks of the Walchensee

During the "rescue operation" on Wednesday evening, the helpers of the water rescue on the way from Sassau towards Niedernach am Ufer noticed a thin column of smoke. A later review showed: In the “Buchenort” area between Sassau and Sachsenbach, a fireplace was hidden behind a stone wall. At this type of private bathing and barbecue area, according to the water watch, there was also a grill grate and firewood piled up as a reserve. The person found there, who came from the "local area", expressed a lack of understanding as to where the problem was.

Adlwarth has the answer: It is strictly forbidden to make a fire in the area and subject to a fine.

“Rotwild is at home nearby,” he says.

"If the animals smell the fire, it is a forest fire for them and their instinct to flee kicks in." That means an enormous stressful situation for the animals - especially at a time when they have calves one and a half to two weeks old.

That is why it is forbidden to make a fire at Walchensee

Adlwarth also refers to the carcinogenic carbons that remain and get into the water.

The danger of forest fires is obvious.

“Many do not have the flying sparks in their eye.” This means that a campfire is also a risk if it is far away from the edge of the forest.

The construction of the wall is not directly prohibited.

Nevertheless, Adlwarth has a clear opinion on it.

“Nature has everything ready for people.

Do you have to take structural measures? ”The ranger asks you to consider whether moving the stones will disturb animals, be it fish spawning grounds in the water or snakes on land.

When the wall at Walchensee is removed, snakes appear

When five helpers from the water rescue service and Adlwarth removed the stones on Friday, two grass snakes and an adder promptly came to light.

The six people involved spent an hour and a half dismantling the wall, which, according to the water watch, was three meters long and one meter high.

Lisa Grünwald from the water rescue service: “That was a real bulwark.

We haven't seen anything like it yet. "
