- The Tölzer Rathausspitze had to put up with severe criticism in the town hall because of the poor condition of Bairawieser Straße.

The residents Marion Möslein, Jürgen Gawenda and Veronika Bürger accused the city of delaying the expansion.

In an interview, Mayor Ingo Mehner and the head of department answered questions from the Tölzer Kurier and explained the status quo.

The expansion of Bairawieser Straße in Bad Tölz has been planned for 30 years

Yes, treasurer Hermann Forster frankly admits, “the road is a jumble track” and an expansion has been planned for 30 years. But she never made the leap to the top of the prioritization list. With the completion of the sewer construction and house connection measures a year and a half ago, it was clear that the expansion was coming. The corona pandemic caused another delay. “We didn't know what to expect financially,” says Mayor Ingo Mehner. The postponement of all measures that were not immediately necessary was therefore inevitable.

Other issues also slowed down.

For example, that the funding process for the road has not been completed.

There was a change of clerk in the government of Upper Bavaria, which made rescheduling necessary.

Foregoing subsidies from the Free State, as the critics said, referring to the construction road on Hintersberg financed by the city, is not an option for Mehner.

"Then it'll tear us apart."

Apart from that: The construction road on Hintersberg will cost around 270,000 euros according to the results of the tender, of which the city will bear around 150,000 and will ultimately be counter-financed with the sale of the apartment.

For the expansion of Bairawieser Strasse, however, around 1.2 million euros are required.

The state pays around 600,000 euros if it is built according to its wishes.

Lot of money.

Until 1967 the Bairawieser Straße was the main thoroughfare of Bad Tölz

That is the keyword for civil engineering manager Sebastian Scheidl, who explains that the city wanted to accommodate the 40 or so residents. Crossing aids and offset parking were planned. “The government of Upper Bavaria rejected that.” Background: Until 1967, Bairawieser Strasse was the main thoroughfare into the city. Only then, according to traffic clerk Alexander Schindler, was it downgraded to the inner-city connecting road at the expense of Jahnstrasse.

On average over the past few years, it is used by 2,150 vehicles a day.

There are 13,000 vehicles on the Osterleite.

There would be no funding whatsoever for a residential street.

So Bairawieser Straße will definitely remain a thoroughfare, says Forster.

To this end, the junction from Jahnstrasse will be significantly revised.

A small green area, a changed curve radius and a crossing aid should ensure that motorists have to slow down significantly.

This is the timetable for the expansion of Bairawieser Straße

The negotiations on site did not go smoothly either.

The 5.50 meter wide street will have a sidewalk a little more than two meters wide on the east side - for the schoolchildren, among other places.

The fact that it will not be so wide throughout is due to some landowners who did not want to sell any land to the city at acceptable prices.

“You have to accept that,” says Mehner.

You can also park along the street.

What is the next timetable?

The funding application for the road from the Jahnstraße junction to the narrow point after the Schießstattstraße confluence has been discussed in advance, says Scheidl.

“The funding process should be completed this year,” Forster adds, “the tender will follow in winter.” The city's budget for 2022 will also have the necessary own funds.

So it can start in 2022.

Thanks to the delay, residents do not have to pay for the expansion

The delays in the expansion of Bairawieser Straße also have positive effects for the residents, as Ingo Mehner says.

In the past, the expansion would also have been paid for by the residents.

Only with the abolition of the road development contribution statute are citizens generally exempt from paying.

The result: “Everything has been reversed,” says Hermann Forster.

In the past, citizens would have braked hard when expanding their streets and rather waved them off.

"Things can't go fast enough for them today."
