Berlin in a "state of emergency": violent storms are raging over the capital

Severe storms occur in Berlin and Bavaria.

The federal capital was affected by fallen trees and full tunnels.

Berlin - In parts of Berlin and Bavaria, violent storms fell on Sunday. A spokeswoman for the German Weather Service (DWD) reported in the evening of up to 50 liters of precipitation per hour on one square meter at around 7 p.m. in Berlin-Buch, and of 40 liters in Berlin-Marzahn. At Berlin Airport (BER) in Schönefeld, Brandenburg, there were numerous delays in the evening, and the departures were jammed. The German Weather Service recently warned of further thunderstorms over Germany. *

In Schlehdorf in the Upper Bavarian district of Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen, around 43 liters per square meter fell at 6 p.m., according to the DWD.

The rain was also heavy in Irschenberg in the Upper Bavarian district of Miesbach.

It had rained heavily, especially in the north-east of the capital, said a Berlin police spokesman, speaking of fallen trees and full tunnels.

The Berlin fire brigade announced on Twitter that it was in a state of emergency.

Operations would be processed with priority, there could be waiting times on the emergency number 112.

The German Weather Service had also warned many districts of Brandenburg. Occasionally trees could be uprooted and roofs damaged, cellars and streets could be flooded as well as brooks and rivers overflowing their banks.

In Graustein in the city of Spremberg in the Brandenburg district of Spree-Neisse, according to the DWD, around 4 p.m. in the afternoon around 35 liters of rain fell on the square meter. (dpa)
