A week after
"Freedom day"
, the day of the complete lifting of anti-Covid restrictions in England, the country suffers from significant disruption linked to the sharp increase in the number of people forced to self-isolate after coming into contact with a person infected with the virus.
Canceled trains, long queues at airports and a shortage of staff in the restaurant industry are some of the consequences of what the tabloids have dubbed the
"pingdemic"
, in reference to the
"ping"
issued by smartphones to notify the receipt of a message.
Between July 7 and July 14, more than 600,000 people in England and Wales were placed under quarantine after receiving an alert message via the Covid-19 app from the NHS, the UK's public health system.
Eight days ago Boris Johnson himself was forced into self-isolation after a meeting with Tory MPs.
