There is great concern about new storms in the flood areas.

KATWARN triggers in a circle.

Offenbach - The next storm in Germany is imminent on Sunday.

Orange alert applies to the whole country.

Strong thunderstorms with hail, heavy downpours, heavy rain and hurricane gusts are emerging.

The low pressure zone continues to expand from France to Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg (BeNeLux) and northern Germany, the German Weather Service (DWD) announced on Sunday.

Warm, humid and unstable air masses move further to the northeast.

“The atmosphere is boiling,” explains meteorologist Lars Kirchhübel in the DWD weather video.

“Extreme storms!” - Fears of severe storms in the south

In the south, there is a threat of “extreme storms!”: The DWD has issued advance weather information for severe thunderstorms. At the edge of the Alps there is increased potential for severe weather: thunderstorms like thunderstorms with large hail of three centimeters, heavy gusts of wind to gale-force gusts (90 to 110 km / h) and heavy rain (over 30 liters per square meter for a short time). According to the current DVD forecast, the risk increases until Sunday evening: several hours of heavy rain, locally with 40 and 60 liters per square meter within a few hours, in some cases up to 80 per square meter, according to the DWD experts, cannot be ruled out.

"In the rest of Germany, occasional violent developments cannot be completely ruled out," tweeted the DWD on Sunday morning.

To this end, the weather service publishes a graphic entitled “Thunderstorms with the risk of heavy rain on Sunday (25 July 2021)”.

There is initially no official DWD storm warning on the website (as of July 25, 12.46 p.m.).

KATWARN triggered: flood area in NRW warns of thunderstorms

However, the district of Euskirchen (North Rhine-Westphalia) triggered KATWARN on Sunday morning.

In the “special case” category, the control center addresses the population in the particularly badly affected flood area.

Here is the information on weather and relief measures from July 25, 2021 in full:

“Today, July 25th, from noon onwards, there is a risk of individual, but sometimes strong, showers and thunderstorms, occasionally with heavy rain up to 25 l / m², small-grained hail and squalls up to 70 km / h.

Severe weather-like developments with precipitation of up to 30 l / sqm should remain the exception, according to the German Weather Service.

On the night of Monday the showers subside.

We ask you to continue to be vigilant and to remain calm.

Consider existing damage to roads and sidewalks and the risk of loose debris as a result of the July 14th storm.

Don't spread rumors and false statements.

We ask spontaneous helpers not to drive into places with storm damage and to park far outside.

Keep roads clear for rescue and rescue vehicles.

Notes:

Do not go into basements or underground garages if there is a risk of flooding. Do not drive through flooded streets. Even a low water level can hinder control. Switch off electricity, gas and heating in rooms at risk. There is already a risk of electric shock with condensation! If the junction box is in the flooded room, do not enter it, but inform the fire brigade (112). Adapt your behavior in traffic to the conditions. Keep drains and shafts free so that the water can run off. "

Today, widespread showers and thunderstorms can form in warm, humid air.

There is an increased potential for severe weather (red marking) in the southeast.

In the rest of Germany, occasional violent developments cannot be entirely ruled out.

Storm in the night on Sunday: flood areas spared

The flood areas in Rhineland-Palatinate and North Rhine-Westphalia were largely spared from heavy rain and thunderstorms on Sunday night.

On the other hand, Belgium was hit particularly hard by storms.

Heavy thunderstorms also raged in southern Germany.

In Stuttgart (Baden-Württemberg) the city center was flooded by the rains.

The water could not drain because of a blocked gully. A lightning strike caused a power outage in Salem near Ravensburg on Saturday evening at around 5.15 p.m., the police said on Sunday. The fuses in the main power box were damaged and several power lines burned. The damage cannot yet be quantified.
