There are nearly a thousand child abuse cases in Hong Kong each year, with physical abuse and sexual assault accounting for the highest proportion. However, "child abuse detective" doctor Chen Fengying believes that most of the undetected cases are negligent care and signs are extremely inconspicuous.

"If you disperse the information, you will never find the abused children." The staff may find that the children are often late and absent, in ragged clothes, and it is not difficult for neighbors to find that individual neighboring families are particularly dirty or even smelly.

Chen Fengying pointed out that negligence is a precursor to many cases of physical abuse, which can lead to serious consequences, such as damage to the brain nerves of the abused child.

If in doubt, members of the public can call the hotline of the Family and Child Protection Service Section of the Social Welfare Department.

According to the SWD, there were 940 child abuse cases recorded in Hong Kong last year. Physical abuse accounted for 40%, sexual assault accounted for more than 33%, and negligence accounted for 21%.

According to the SWD, there were 940 child abuse cases recorded in Hong Kong last year. Physical abuse accounted for 40%, sexual assault accounted for more than 33%, and negligence accounted for 21%. The overall number was slightly lower than previous years, and the ratio was less than 10%.

Chen Fengying, Honorary Clinical Associate Professor of the Department of Pediatrics at CUHK and associate consultant of Pediatrics at the Wells Hospital, said that the data ratio may not reflect the actual situation, because physical abuse can cause injuries and is easier for the outside world to discover.

She believes that most child abuse cases in the community are negligent care, but the signs are hard to find and have not been exposed.

When the caregiver’s life needs, mental health, financial support, or discipline are extremely unsatisfactory, it can constitute negligence, and it is also an early sign of serious child abuse.

The more common case is in drug-addicted families, where parents spend all their money on drugs, their daily habits are reversed and they lose their ability to take care of them.

Chen Fengying believes that negligence needs to be discovered simultaneously by different units.

The situation in the school is more conspicuous. The staff may find that children are often late, absent without reason, and fail to pay notices and fees.

In terms of appearance, abused children are prone to ragged clothes, insufficient warmth, and tied nails. "There are children who have not tried wearing belts for a few years after returning to school, and some children return to school in winter with summer shirts." They often have unusually thin bodies, "See After the children returned to learn to grab food from their classmates, the prophet later had no breakfast."

It is not difficult for neighbors to find that individual households’ homes are messy and dirty, with a lot of cockroaches or mice, take-out boxes, wet clothes, etc., or raising many animals, reflecting the spirit of the residents or problems.

When children come into contact with family misfortunes, such as abuse, divorce, family drug use or mental illness, the development of the brain's nervous system will be destroyed.

The more abuse, the more serious the damage.

Even more frightening is that the brain nerves can already be damaged in the early childhood, and there is no need to remember any experience.

When the brain lacks nerve lines, it can affect the children's future activities and social development.

For example, Chen Fengying said that they smoked more, used drugs, and had frequent sexual behaviors in their adolescence; while they were more likely to suffer from long-term diseases such as heart disease and asthma when they were older, for unknown reasons.

Chen Fengying hopes to wake up people in different positions. If something is wrong with the child, he should report it to the corresponding unit and collect the information.

If in doubt, members of the public can call the hotline of the Family and Child Protection Service Section of the Social Welfare Department.
