Nicolas Baverez: "Cooperate or disappear"

2021-07-25T18:47:43.146Z

CHRONICLE - Faced with the rise in planetary risks, democracies must not only reinvent themselves; they must help rebuild an international order compatible with freedom.

Summer 2021 begins under the sign of planetary risks.

The Covid pandemic continues to thwart the calculations of scientists and the action of governments, with the Delta variant sweeping through Southeast Asia, South Africa and Europe.

This fourth wave threatens the global recovery and increases the crisis in emerging countries, when only 20% of the world population is vaccinated and 1% in poor countries.

The devastating floods in Germany, Belgium and central China, as well as the fires in Canada and the American West, underscore the reality of climate change.

Despite the multiplication of extreme events that validate the pessimistic forecasts of the IPCC, the rebound in activity linked to the end of the epidemic will cause new emissions records in 2022 and 2023, compromising the objective of the agreement of Paris to limit the rise in temperatures to 2 ° C by the end of the century.
