For a long time it was unclear whether they could really tackle the crossing of the Alps by bike.

But on this Sunday, 16 eleventh graders from the Tölzer grammar school start their great adventure.

Bad Tölz - For a long time they worried whether their work would be worth it at all.

The students from the Sport-P-Seminar “Mountainbike-Alpencross” of the Tölzer Seidl-Gymnasium.

The eleventh graders have been planning to cross the Alps on a mountain bike for many weeks.

Due to the pandemic, they were unsure for a long time whether it was just planning or whether they could really kick off.

Sports teacher is experienced in crossing the Alps

Now, of course, the joy is great.

Because on Sunday, July 25th, it starts for the 14 boys and two girls.

They are accompanied by sports teacher Andreas Polke and a former student.

Polke is not leading the seminar for the first time and is experienced in crossing the Alps.

From Seefeld in Tirol - the pupils are carpooled there by car - it should go over four intermediate stages to Lake Kaltern.

The young people want to complete the tour in five days.

But they don't go back to Tölz by bike, but by bus.

The company is carefully planned

“We had five working groups for the entire organization,” explains pupil and seminar participant Bernhard Reimann.

One group was responsible for planning the bike route, another for booking suitable accommodation, there was a team for planning and implementing the joint training units, one for sponsoring and a group dealing with the topic of media, and there was also one Reimann active.

“Of course, the areas often overlapped and we always worked closely together,” he reports.

Nothing works without good preparation

The 16 prospective high school graduates have undertaken steep climbs of over 1000 meters per day.

This is not easy to master without preparation and the right equipment.

Therefore, the students trained together on the local mountains.

Condition, strength, technique.

"For example, we were on the Blomberg or drove to the Schwaigeralm." There are steep passages and root paths that would be good for improving technical skills.

"For example, how to drive over roots or how to shift your weight when going downhill so as not to fall over the handlebars when braking," explains Reimann.

There was support from the local economy

In order to ensure good equipment, the students were energetically and generously supported by local shops and companies. “Some have helped us with money, others with useful donations in kind such as replacement tubes or cool jerseys,” enthuses the 17-year-old. Before it finally starts over the mountains on Sunday morning, Bernhard Reimann and his classmates are getting their bikes up to scratch. Major training units are no longer on the program for the eleventh grader until then: "I will no longer exert myself too much so that I cannot start with sore muscles, but with full reserves."
