Russian President Vladimir Putin warned today (Sunday) that the navy could locate any enemy and launch an "inevitable attack" if necessary.

"We are able to locate any enemy underwater, above water, in the air and if necessary carry out an unavoidable attack against him," Putin said in a speech in St. Petersburg on Navy Day.

Putin's remarks came weeks after a British warship passed near the Crimean peninsula last month and angered Moscow.

Russia has claimed that its forces fired warning shots at the British destroyer and dropped bombs on its way to expel it from the shores of the peninsula it annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

Britain has rejected Russia's version of events, saying it believes the shooting was part of a pre-announced Russian exercise, and denied any bombs were dropped on the British destroyer 'Defender'.

Putin said last month that Russia could have drowned the destroyer, which it claimed had penetrated Russia's territorial waters - without a third world war.

The Russian president has accused the United States of involvement in "provocation".
